Gear What helmet(s) do you wear?

I bought a photocromatic (self tinting) for my Bell Star, which I still use.
Is it fast enough when going through tunnels?

Shoei has an electronic one. You can leave it on auto tinting mode, or change the tinting level with a touch off a button. Pretty cool but expensive and only available in Japan at the moment, but it seems to work pretty well.

The internal Visor looks good, but so far I don't like them but most road use helmets appear to have them now
Race oriented helmets and retro models, don't have them. Arai don't have them at all. Instead they have an external sun visor!
I think helmets sold in United States don't have them either, because of the snell certification, but americans forum members can tell if I'm wrong or just outdated 😅

I like the internal visor on my Shoei GT Air 2, but could go for a photocromatic one, just to have a lighter helmet.🙂

They absolutely do and I hate that. Need a new helmet and they all gave that stupid drop down visor, Ug…

Ok then. Go try an Arai 😉
Arai doesn’t fit my head shape and I’ll be damned if I drop $1k plus on something that doesn’t protect any better than a $200 helmet does simply because it says “Arai” on a sticker.

To each their own, though.
My quest on helmets is to find the best anti fog one 🙄
My experience is you‘d be hard pressed to beat a Pinlock capable shield. Unless you wear glasses (which are what fogs up 95% of the time, not the shield) and then an electric, heated snowmobile shield is your only real choice for little to no fog.

😂 I agree with you!
I had the same opinion on Shoei that costs half of an Arai. I had two Cabergs in the past. 200€ helmets with 5 stars on Sharp tests. But after trying a Shoei... the comfort (perfect for my head), lightness, quality of the visor ( sun visor on latest Caberg used to make me headaches after some time)... I changed my mind.
However... not to point of going to an Arai! 😅

I wear pinlock all the time on cold / wet weather. But its a pain having to remove it every week to clean and reinstall the pinlock.

🤔 Interesting... didn't knew that. Will take a look into it. Thanks. 👍

I use a Transitions (photochromic) shield. And while it only takes a few seconds to adjust to changing light, it still catches me off guard when going through some tunnels - especially if it's a shorter tunnel where there's no added artificial lighting through the pass that could otherwise provide safer peripherals. Still, I would always choose it over any built-in visor solution - and the convenience of not having to carry and change shields manually for different lighting conditions is worth the premium price for it in my own humble opinion. It's just best to try and remember to keep the photochromic shield covered when not in use if you can, as UV will eventually - albeit, very slowly - degrade the performance of the photochromic properties over time.

My Pinlock is so effective that I hardly ever have to separate it from the shield. Perhaps you have a small partial separation in the seal of yours?

It comes down to fit in my opinion. I’m a Shoei shaped head and while I find them comfortable and high quality I am not bound to them. Currently have an RF1200 and an RPHA11, both great, mid-line helmets. Both bought spin a super closeout, new but a few model years old. That doesn’t stop me from also liking lower end/mid level Bell and HJC, both also fit my head fine, close enough in comfort to Shoei I don’t miss the extra money. Then when I inevitably drop one, I’m not overly worried about tossing it and getting another.

Too many people equate cost with protection, it’s just not true.

Going to agree with Ive @Ive in that once my Pinlock is in I almost never have to remove it, maybe once or twice a year for a “deep” clean. Be sure to carefully read how they install, you may be missing a step? Not sure, used them for maybe 10 years now, half a dozen different helmets and brands, clear and smoked shield for most with the same result.

Sorry for the delay I've been on my jollies.
The only tunnels I've been through have never been a concern to me, they all seam to have lighting inside, but have never really noticed the change to my eyes. The helmet would be outside whilst I get ready and already tinted by the time I mount up.
personally I love the visor, it was expensive at £125.00 but has been brilliant, it only swaps from winter when I prefer the pinlock due to rain.
