I concerned about this issue too when i saw oil around water pump and few drop under it. All stopped when i change chain lube to more sticky ones. Remove chain guard and clean all chain lube stick on this area. And now my pump dry and clean. I guess heat from operating engine made chain lube hot and slide down my water pump, leave a drop of oil on its bottom.
Good call. I'm not sure that's the case for me though, the consistency after the engines cooled down makes me think it's from the engine. Will check it out anyway.

I had a panic about this a few weeks ago. So I unloaded a litre of muc-off under there with a paintbrush and degreased the engine area left/hand side and front.

Thought I had a massive leak (including water pump). Turns out I had dribbled oil everywhere when I did the valve clearances. Once the oil was off the engine and it was clean...all good ever since!

So, moral of the story here: You don't have an oil leak until you have a clean engine with an oil leak.

I agree with the comments about chain oil gathering around front sprocket and running off hot engine etc . Don't know about oil appearing near water pump but cleaning of fling off from chain required around side stand pivot, rubber hoses and under chain guard on my bike .

Hmmm. Now I’m concerned. Mine was bone dry and clean and now it’s not. No oil but way more than one drop of coolant from one ride. Coolant can be seen in dried drips and it’s also splattered on the side of the oil filter... Should I be worried? Never had any coolant drops before.27FC8212-9D93-43FA-87F1-7F298C89A80F.jpeg

This is what the manual says about it:

Check the bleed hole [1 J of the water pump for signs of
coolant leakage.
• A small amount of coolant weeping from the bleed hole is normal.
• Make sure that there are no continuous coolant leakage [2] from the bleed hole while operating the engine.
Replace the water pump body if necessary.

My advice is, clean the coolant drops and check it again after a ride! Just what Brammers says, looks pretty normal for now.

Not to disappoint you, but Honda is not the greatest regarding communication. Great example is there delivery schedule for QS that they change every day to there dealerships. They are experts in leaving their customers in the dark

Gave up, sold it.... :(
Ah really sorry to hear that.. Are you looking for another bike now?
Did the dealer take it back? I would be affraid the value of the bike would drop too much with a leaking water pump.
I'm still hoping they can fix mine, but I can understand you got tired of it..

Aside from goblin getting a new water pump replacement to fix the issue, anyone else know of any fixes? I just had the o-ring on my water pump replaced since it started leaking but now after the fix, it's still leaking but from a slightly different spot.

As far as I know, replacing the pump was the solution for some people. With others (including me) it seems to start leaking again after a while.
I don't remember I've seen any other solutions.

I will bring my bike back to the dealer, he will investigate the problem again and contact Honda about the problem because he thinks that if replacing the pump didn't help, there could be an other issue, or the design of the pump is bad, in wich case honda would have to fix it..

Since it leaks only very small amounts I chose to bring it in only after the summer holiday, didn't want to risk not being able to ride in the summer.

I'll post an update when/if it is fixed.

This is cute!

The hole is called the “weep hole”. It’s not that water pumps are naturally sad 😢 or anything.

Found article, it's not directed for our motorcycles, but interesting to read or weep about o_O

Hole in My Water Pump?
I’ve got a small unplugged hole in the front of my water pump. What’s up with that? Have I lost a bolt or something? Should I plug it up with some sealant or screw a bolt in there or what? Not to worry. Here's the skinny on that little hole in your water pump.

Weep Holes
Water pumps all come with a hole in them. The hole is called the “weep hole”. It’s not that water pumps are naturally sad or anything. They need the weep hole to warn you when seals are about to fail in the pump. The weep hole is intended to allow extra lubricant from the pump bearings to drip out of the water pump housing. Without this hole, the oil would be forced past the water pump seal and get into the engine coolant. The hole also allows coolant to escape the pump housing instead of being forced past the oil seals to contaminate the bearings.

Seal Failure
The way you can tell if a seal if about to fail is by checking the weep hole to see what is coming out If oil comes out of the weep hole, it means you have a blown or failing oil seal. If, instead, water or anti-freeze leaks out of the weep hole, then you have a leaking internal water pump seal in the case. Small amounts of moisture or oil around the weep hole is probably not a problem, but if there is significant leakage of water or oil, it’s time to replace the water pump.

Hi Bishop,

This is precisely what my dealer explain to me when my water pump started leaking oil.
For me a new pump did the trick but I think there is more behind the faulty pumps
1: either a faulty batch
2: poor pump design problem (Build year 2016 +)
3: quality issues with the inner seal
I only hope my pump holds up. I put a couple of thousand km on the bike after the pump replacement, and I still check sometimes my pump for leakage, apparently I still don’t have complete trust in my new pump 🤔

Yeah I'm going to take the bike back to the shop.. hopefully they can offer a fix and potentially replace the water pump. I love everything about the bike, but oil leaks occurring after a couple months of ownership is annoying.
