All 650Rs Oil leak

I would not be surprised if Honda hadn't noticed the failure rate / warranty claim rate already and had internally recalled / reworked the design.

Stick with it as they'll get it solved - it's just a case of getting the bad batch of pumps out of the supply chain. Cov19 probably isn't helping things, either.

It's probably something daft like a slightly undersized/faulty batch of O-rings used.

It could be just a faulty batch of pumps! On my bike they replaced my pump with a new one (first replacement of a leaking oil pump on this bike) The question now is! Is my new installed pump coming from a different batch or is it still the old (malfunctioning) batch? My pump is still bone dry, I stopped checking it after every ride for about 1000 miles 😬 but I’m still not complete happy with the thought of this issue! If Honda comes with a proper recall I’ll be satisfied but for now it’s still a waiting game for me. For example: I owned a Honda NC700 from 2012 and this bike got a recall for the chain and sprocket, brought my bike back to the dealer and they replaced the stuff 👍 so I have still good hope for the CB650R and CBR650R.

I'm also a bit disappointed in Honda. Everyone I spoke to in advance told me how reliable they are, but now there is this issue, and apart from that I am still waiting for my quickshifter to arrive (since march) after I waited 7 months for the CBR.

Honda IS very reliable! Considering the number of motorcycles built, if you're going to base Honda's overall quality on a batch of bad pumps then that's not being very fair.

Hey, the reason I'm on my Honda right now is because my Versys got me so angry trying to work on it. Nothing, really, "wrong" with the motorcycle but it was just the way they designed it and some of the specs they continue to use that turned me off to Kawasaki. Is it fair to hate everything Kawasaki from my experience with the Versys? Of course not!

I understand why the above owners would feel that way towards Honda. I mean, you're spending a good chunk of $$$ on something that should NOT have these issues. But overall, I'd pick a Honda before any other motorcycle.

I understand what you're saying. And I don't think that every bike they build is bad, but buying from Honda I didn't expect to have an issue on a brand new bike. Also the delivery of the bike that was 2 months late and the sport package that takes months to arrive piece by piece (still waiting) is a bit of a disappointment.
But these things do happen even to the most expensive bikes, I'm not all negative about it, more important for me is how they will fix the issue. I'm still hoping to keep this bike for a long time!

'19 CBR650R with 2300 miles here, bought new August '19 , this thread prompted me to carefully inspect just today, area is dry, no such issue present. Matter of fact, no issues anywhere.

Mine has no issues, but I’m a little worried it’s going to start leaking right when the warranty is over. Who wants to pay for a new pump out of pocket on a 2 year old bike? Hopefully they would be understanding, but I have my doubts.

I’m getting close to 2,000 miles and that whole area is still completely bone dry. Bought my bike in November.

I hope it stays dry! I doubt all the bikes will have the issue. I would say don't be too gentle on the bike in the warranty period 😀. So that if something breaks, it will break under warranty.

* by not being too gentle, I don't mean torturing the engine 🙂

I hear you! Sometimes I’ll give her all the beans. Lol. I also go for short 30 minute rides to try to put some miles on before warranty ends. Bike has done well. Fuel economy is increasing yet. I’m happy!

The failure rate isn't that high and its not a safety issue, so why recall?

So long as they blanket allow warranty work I think that's fine.

They do need to revise the design though.

I'm still waiting for a new crankcase for mine, Had the on going issue since January now. Even honda UK are not any help with it

At this point, sadly, I'd say to do your best on getting a full replacement bike or a full refund. Hopefully, through documentation, this is a possibility. Good luck and keep us informed on what you decide and how it works out.

A new crankcase? If that statement is accurate...can you clarify? If Honda UK is no help....are you implying YOU are paying for crankcases and the required engine rebuild? All due to the thread subject water pump leak?

Watching this thread with interest. I've noticed some oil around the water pump area on a couple of occasions, once at the base of the water pump and seperately around the oil filter.
Very small amounts both times (not enough to drip) but definitely something I'll keep an eye on...

I just got my pump fixed under warranty....now its leaking around the oil filter. All part of the fun i guess 🤣

I concerned about this issue too when i saw oil around water pump and few drop under it. All stopped when i change chain lube to more sticky ones. Remove chain guard and clean all chain lube stick on this area. And now my pump dry and clean. I guess heat from operating engine made chain lube hot and slide down my water pump, leave a drop of oil on its bottom.

Excessive chain lube or very thin lube can be a reason why you get oil near your water pump. The oil is than coming from your front sprocket leaking down! In my case did wasn’t the reason for my oil leak because I use the very sticky MUC-OFF spray and I use just the right amount of spray and afterwards I wipe off any excessive spray. My water pump is replaced and it’s still bone dry, fingers crossed it stays that way 😁
