CBR650R Engine stutters / won't go above 6000 RPM

Goodmorning everyone,

This weekend I've went for my first 'trip' with my CBR650R.
It's a restricted version (35 kw/ 47 hp because I have an A2 license)

Everything went well on roads where you can drive 50, 70 or 90 km/h.
But then I wanted to feel what my bike was like on the highway/ higher revs.

As soon as I reached 6000 RPM (+ - 126 km/h) my bike stuttered like it was going to blow up.. It felt like the engine was getting no spark/injection anymore.
Only thing I could do, was pull the clutch and hope for the best...
When the stuttering happend, my Torque control indicator turned on and my quickshifter would'nt work anymore.

I've stopped, turned the engine off, waited a bit and I went driving again.
Then I noticed, that the problem occurs in every gear.
As soon as I hit the 6K mark in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th, the bike won't do a thing and stutters like crazy (quite dangerous If you ask me!)

A little summary;

Problem --> can't go above 6K in every gear.

Result if I try; - Engine stutters like crazy/goes full mad inside
- Quickshifter won't work anymore
- Torque control indicator keeps on lighting

So does anyone feel familiar with this problem ?
Or any idea what it could be ?

I already contacted my dealer and they gonna contact Honda for this problem..
They gave me no direct answer to my problem :rolleyes: , but I think it has something to do with the restriction..

Kind regards,
Gilles

Hey Gilles,

I would go back to the dealer or at least give them a call.. doesn't seem normal to me. Unless they put a rev limiter on it at 6000 rpm, but in the reviews I've seen so far I don't think I saw anything about a rev limiter on the 35kw versions. The LAMS version does have another mapping on the ecu, so maybe there is a problem with the mapping?

In the link above its obvious that you should be able to go above 6000 rpm, so lets hope the dealer just limited the revs or something in the ecu, should be easily fixed in that case..

Well, my dealer is closed in the weekend and on monday's :(
But I tried to call them a few times and after sendig a message that it is just not responsible riding with this bike on the road, a mechanic called me.
He couldn't give me a propper answer to my problem only that they gonna contact Honda Belgium and adress the problem and that they will get in touch with me this tuesday..
I think that they only restricted my bike mechanical and that they forgot the electronical part or that something went wrong with the mapping like you say (just me guessing).
It's a 4 cyl bike and these machines only come alive above 6000 RPM but I can't even reach that..

I Hope that my dealer will call me soon and that it can be fixed fast!
For now, it's just to dangerous to ride my bike, pfff

It's an A2 restricted model ... it's never really going to "come alive" until you get the A2 removed ;)
Yeah that is true but still, it isn’t normal that I need to ride 90km/h in 5th gear so I don’t reach 6000 rpm 🧐
In neutal = 10k revs all I want but as soon as I shift, it locks up all the way..

Hopefully they figure it out soon

So start from the beginning:

- Have you ever been able to rev it past 6K on the road? Not in neutral, I see you can, but on the road?

- What have you done to the bike lately? Any mods?

- How many miles on it?

- How long have you owned it?

- Has it been down?

- Is it stuttering around 6K or is it a hard cutoff and exactly 6K every time? If it’s EXACTLY 6K that makes me think it’s supposed to be there. I know more and more bikes are coming with programming to limit revs and engine at break in time, though I’ve not heard of anyone else stating this on the R, I wonder if it’s a programming thing. On the Ducati forum I’ve heard of several people stating their bike wouldn’t rev all the way until after the first service was done, mine went straight to redline from the start so maybe it’s a different country thing.

- If you let off the gas does it go back to normal?

- This is not a simple problem, but I think the fact the quick shifter doesn’t work is a clue. Can you disconnect the wiring from it and try again? Did the dealer fit it? Have you had it on the bike from new?

It should rev well beyond 6K, even restricted, but won’t have much getup and go. I know you’re looking for a solution right now but I think the dealer is your best shot at this point.

Hellow,

I've only got the bike from thursday the 29th of august so first time I rode it, was previous weekend.

- No, i've never been able to rev it pas 6K , in every gear I try.

-Mods: only other rear indicators. And the dealer installed a 12V connection and the quickshifter (from the sports pack) for me!

- Only 312 km's +/- 193 miles on it.

- Owned it from the 29th of august and got my number plates on friday the 30th.

- Been down? No the bike is to expensive to let it fall on the ground ;).

- When it touches 6K rev's it's a stutters likes hell and I feel the bike wants to go higher but the electronics/ injection won't let it.
When I release my throttle, the bike goes back to normal except that the torque control light turns on and quickshifter gets turned off.
So yes and no, it goes 'half' normal when reaching 6K

I will try to ride with the unplugged quickshifter but I don't think that this will be the problem because the quickshifter works as long as I don't reach 6K.

And You will be right, it's gonna be a dealer thing to fix, maybe they forgot the mapping when restricting my bike...?

So the quickshifter works below 6K? It just turns off once you hit 6K and after you restart it goes back to working?

Yeah, that’s a programming thing, I’d bet. More miles may be the “fix”.

Yes, that is it. Works below 6k and shuts off when 6k is touched.
Restarting the bike = all back to normal until you touch 6K again...

29 August....just a few days ago. Clearly a dealer/warranty issue. I'd suggest not making any attempts at DIY repair. Leave it alone...avoid any complications ....simply dump it on them for complete, no charge repair.
When picking the bike up, get an assurance the bike was test ridden by their tech, the repair confirmed as success.

Yes indeed, it was deliverd with 1.8 km’s on it.. so I guess they didn’t even tested if the restriction to 35kw was fine, same for the quickshifter.
The bike will stay locked for now until I hear more from my dealer (gonna call them tomorrow as soon as they are open)
In my opinion this is indeed a pre- delivery / warranty issue like you say.

Little update:

My dealer just called me and they have contacted Honda Belgium for this problem but they haven't got an answer yet.
But mine dealer thinks the quickshifter interferes with the ECU or something like that...
However I think the quickshifter is not the problem but who Am I

I'm Just gonna have to sit down and wait for a call with news

At least they are taking action with "the big guys" aka Honda. Did the dealer actually re-examine your bike? Or was all this done via phone?

Yes indeed, I hope Honda answers them soon..
And it was all done over the phone, my dealer didn't propose to bring the bike to their shop for a little examination :/
I'm guessing they first want to know what Honda answers before they call my bike back.

You've got to throw more pressure on them. Demand they come round and collect the bike immediately.....tell them they have a week or so to fix or you want another one. Your consumer rights re faulty goods fully applies here. Get those aftermarket indicators off it, unless dealer installed and get on the phone tomorrow :) Good luck

Well I'll will give them some time to react and communicate with Honda Belgium, but if they don't call/ email me by the end of this week i'm just gonna call them again.
It's after all a brand new bike and the riding season is almost over here and I want to grind some more km's.

Honda dealers are careless

I think you are painting with a very broad brush.
There are good and bad, its all about the owners general "policies" and who he hires which creates an atmosphere at the dealership. There are good and bad techs, good and bad parts guys, good and bad salesmen, good and bad owners....hired individuals make up the dealers staff and contribute to that overall atmosphere. Up to the owner to hire the right people, thus creating the "mojo" when you walk through the door. Hopefully, friendly, upbeat and helpful mojo.

Family owned dealer where I bought (in business over 60 years, same location) I've got the founder's grandson waiting on me in parts. Very polite helpful, responsive and friendly. You better believe HE cares about providing good service, so great atmosphere dealing with him. THAT compels me to return and support by buying there.
His Mom in the office, very nice lady.
Now after my purchase, the actual salesman is stand offish. Not surprising and thats ok. Salesmen are usually all about themselves.
Doubt I'll be dealing with the service department at all...so no comments there. No matter...all DIY going forward.

So, IMHO my guys are ok. Usually, the poorly run and staffed dealerships don't last long....60 years? They are obviously doing something right.
