CB650F Bike won't start after doing maintenance!

The bike's alive!! And it was the simple solution all along. The mechanic gave it varying amounts of throttle when holding the starter button for what felt like an absolute age (easily 10-15 seconds, definitely not the 5 seconds recommended in the owners manual). After that he revved the absolute pants off it for another good minute to shove fuel down it's throat (to the enjoyment of my neighbors lol).

I'll take note of how it starts up over the next week just in case all the attempted starts knackered the spark plugs in some way!? Not sure if that's a thing but hey ho. One of my two starts afterwards was a lil sputtery but maybe I'm hyper aware now

And hopefully this helps anyone else having trouble starting the bike. I tried: pushing the fuel hoses about, WOT start, adding fuel, checking fuses, opening gas cap (that was on another thread here), charging battery, checking cranking voltage... but the solution was simple. Give 'er the beans

Glad you got it up and running!

On the other hand, I'd be wondering what, exactly, caused it not to. I've had my tank off and never had issues afterwards. I don't want to make you paranoid and I'm a total believer in, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!". But did the mechanic tell you any ideas of what specifically may caused this?

Furthermore, is it starting normally now? Turnkey at touch of the button, no throttle opening required? And will it continue to be....going forward?
In any event, glad you (apparently) got it sorted.

Devilsfan @Devilsfan Yess he asked if it'd been a while since it ran, but I ride regularly so didn't think much about it. However...I suspect a catalyst was the day before lifting the tank I ran the bike for less than 10 seconds to get it up the slope into the garage. I've done mini starts aplenty repositioning in car parks etc, and lots of start & stop town journeys, but never one tiny start with no other riding.

Reading other threads here it seems this bike doesn't like short periods of being awake. It did such a number on my bike though!! The first video I posted involved a good amount of cranking. Maybe the hoses weren't in good positions at that moment too hmm. The bike is starting but I'm not completely relaxed haha

ducatiman @ducatiman The mechanic did two starts after his initial tearing-it-from-its-slumber start and they sounded normal. Then I had one normal start and one that was a bit less quick- can't remember if I added throttle here. It's a good point though, I'll keep note of how the bike wakes up and purposely not use the throttle (unless necessary) just in case something isn't quite right after all this. :)

If the battery is a bit weak and the bike doesn't fire up straight away the engine can become flooded and then when you use the open throttle procedure the battery needs to be strong to try several attempts at starting . I had a similar situation when I tried to start the bike after inadvertently leaving a plug in the exhaust after washing the bike. The AA man used a battery booster to get the bike started eventually. He removed a fuse to deactivate the fuel pump instead of using open throttle but I think the whole thing was similar to your problem.
ps you don't use any throttle to start the bike normally of course, just press the starter button.

Lately FI bikes are REALLY not liking the mini starts and will flood very easy. Always run the bike 30 seconds or more minimum. My gut feeling is to get them to start quicker ECUs are dumping tremendous amounts of fuel to the bike in the first 10-15 seconds because this has been very common on the RR and this forum.

E @Enrico That's interesting, I'm glad I just put a booster pack in the underseat storage then. Did your battery behave like normal afterwards? And yep I never used throttle on startup and didn't even know it could be a remedy until now!

miweber929 @miweber929 I see, thank you for the info. It's been good to learn something about the bike through all this at least!

Battery behaved normally afterwards and ever since and bike has started normally at touch of the button ever since. It was a one off problem which was my fault for trying to start the bike with a plug still in the exhaust. I keep battery on Optimate charger if it is parked in the garage for more than a few days.
