Crapy design. Moders Honda engines have a diferente design, pump is inside the engine and there´s a weap chanel to get any coolant out.
There’s nothing wrong with the design of an external water pump, provided it’s executed correctly. Far easier to swap than to have to drain the oil to pull an engine cover off or worse yet maybe pull other parts off during a replacement.

You are right, I might exagerated in my sentence. What I ment is that is not a robust design, because the quality of key componeents can "easily" cause it to fail.
If you look at the construction of the new Africa Twin pump, if the oils seal "fails" the oil leaks into the sump. They built a chanel to weap coolant out.
And you are right, this construction with the exterior pump makes it very easy to replace.

But let me tell you that I tested something that might be the solution to my oil leak.
Waiting to know how much the solution would cost me ;-) ... or if I keep on wiping it.
I tested and loved it ;-)

Hi,

so i have to share my experience with leaks on my 2020 CB650R. Found it one month after my warranty expired... At first i have been told that its leaking oil from the oil filter which i knew was not truth (Its back in 2021 and in that time, iternet was already working, lol, so i found out about the problem very quickly) but i was told that they never heard about this problem with water pump so i have got in contact with a lot of owners from my country and few of them told me the same story - in their dealership, they never heard about this problem. In the same time i started discusion on facebook and i found plenty of people from all over the world with this same issue. After few kilometers i could already see another oil leak. I was really angry so i wrote directly to Honda but never got an answer. So i went back to the dealership, where we decided to let it be, enjoy rest of summer time and fix it in winter. Today i got call from dealer who told me about the bleed hole and said that it is ok to leak a small drop sometimes and asked me if i want to replace my water pump (360€ for water pump, omg). So my investigation on the internet starded again, found out that a little amount of leak might be ok but bigger leak means failure on seal or on water pump. So i looked on my photo and found one bigger drop of oil and other parts (oil filter included) with signs after oil. Right now, i am really angry on Honda what a crappy motorbikes are they selling... and they are not even considering recall, what a company... So my issue is, should i pay for new water pump ? And then maybe again... and again... until ill luckilly find working water pump ? Should i sell it ? Or what should i do ? Help... Sorry for my crappy English. Thank you.

Hello.

Mine was replaced under warranty. It was leaking significantly. Also I was disappointed. I had an image of Honda reliability, not aligned with this. 1st pump was leaking to the point that the sump and filter bottom were dripping.
They do not make a recall because they have no definitive and reliable solution.
Mine was replaced at about 2.000Km but unfortunately, the new pump started also to leak. It leaks very few, but it leaks. My dealer was great, they said they would replace the pump again If I wish. Now with 18.000Km I got used to the idea and decided don´t want anyone messing with my bike anymore.
Today, it leaks just a drop from time to time, doesn’t even drop on the garage floor. Important is that there is absolutely no coolant leak, so I decided not to replace the pump.
Weep hole was built in the pump for coolant small leaks, oil is not normal, but this design is like this and in practice it leaks a bit of oil. Also affects 500cc engine.
If you are happy with the bike, which I do, I would forget about it and let it be. Mine leaks so little that is not even causing oil level to drop. One or two drops is enough to cause what you show in the image. If you are not under warranty, I would not spend that money, as there is a big probability that the new pump is also leaky, and it can even be worse than yours.
As long as it does not leak coolant and doesn’t drip into the garage floor, I would not touch it. Clean it from time to time with a dry rag, you will see the visual impact is "better".
If you see Honda new engines, there was a design change so any leak will remain inside the engine. But this design is prone to this "problem".
Relax and enjoy the bike. Apart from this, it´s a good user friendly bike.

Yeah, it definitely is cool bike. I am just worried about my 2500km long trip. I really dont want to start loosing a lot of coolant or oil somwhere in mountains 1200+ kms away from my country. When i see one drop i am instantly thinking about what if it starts drop more and more…

It looks yours is not dripping significantly. I see no drops on the bottom of the filter. I see them only on the bottom of the pump. From my experience, seems the leak is not severe. As I said, a few drops, heat and dirt make that easily.

I see no signs of coolant leak, otherwise you would see a blue residue. If you are not experiencing a significant oil loss that you could not saw until today, I don't believe you will experience it now.
I suggest you do the following: clean it with a rag, remove the drips from the bottom of the pump. Go for a few rides and control it from time to time. You can have an idea how much Km a single drop needs to be formed. A drop from time to time will not cause any issues in practice. Oil evaporation and burning inside the engine should be more expressive than what the pump is leaking.

I cleaned that place and found it again after 300 Km, right now we tried to replace both seals and will see what is going on because if something leaks from that hole in pump it could mean seal failure as well as pump failure... or nothing really... Of course first to try is the cheaper solution. But before i will chose to replace whole water pump i decided that ill try to ride as much as i can and then compare oil and coolant level. If there will not be significant leak i wont replace that pump and ill go on my long trip of course with good insurance. But if there will be significant leak i will probably replace water pump and sell that bike asap.

300Km?! That is fine! What is a drop of oil every 300Km? - Considering you have to pay for the replacement yourself.

Replacing the pump fit o-ring seal will not solve it. 99% sure the oil is coming through the weep hole. Oil pump is not (easily) serviceable at this level.
I'm also confident there is no coolant loss. Any coolant loss will have to come out through the weep hole, and you would see the blue residue mixed with the oil.
Leave it as it is, don´t lose your time on that trial. Ride it instead ;-)

There are actually 2 seals and someone in this thread said it worked for him, why not to try that, its only around 20€.

Figured I’d just add my experience. 2022 CBR650R. Noticed the side of the oil pan was wet around 3500 miles. Found this forum thread on the water pump issues, and then noticed there was a small drip at the bottom of the pump as well. No drips on garage floor. I had the dealership look at it and explained that I was aware of the common issues with the water pumps. Dealership didn’t seem particularly surprised or concerned. Said it had to do with “tolerances and clearance issues.” I told them I didn’t really want to bother with replacing the water pump or anything just based on the fact countless others have tried to no avail. The bike now has 5200 miles on it and the problem hasn’t gotten better or worse. I might ask to have the pump replaced before my warranty is up but I’m not sure there’s really much of a point. Considering I had rust on my engine case out of the crate (dealership confirmed it was in fact rust, no idea how or why but they removed it and repainted the engine case in that spot), and now this oil leak, I’m really not happy with Honda’s build quality. I’m thinking of trading the bike in for a ZX6R or R6 eventually.

Hey guys, I believe I have this same water pump issue with my brand new 2023 cbr650r 😪. The day after a 2 hour long and very “spirited” ride in the mountains I checked my oil level and the dipstick was dry (coolant level seems to be steady). These pictures show what I found, does this seem to be the same issue and has anyone else had it happen with the 2023 models? Of course I’m well within the warranty but I’m not optimistic about replacing seals or the whole pump after reading this entire thread… This is very frustrating and I’m worried if I’ve done any damage by riding with low oil level.

Yeah looks like your pump is leaking oil, but I also see some oil coming out of the oil sump sealant. Let the dealer sort it out. If your dipstick is dry then the bike is leaking for some time or the oil level was low to begin with. Glad the bike is still under warranty!
