I got to use the SHM10R briefly on a 10 mile ride last night just connected to my iphone. I must say wow what an improvement over my BTI V8. I dont have anyone near by to link it to hear how those features work. But i would highly recommend Sena so far.

I've read about them for years. There are other decent brands, but Sena is the most popular/common.

The general consensus is that you get what you pay for with comm sets.

If you want basic short range (like rider to passenger) functionality, you can go a bit cheaper while sacrificing features.

There are many reviews out there for Sena's. The SMH10 is almost universally seen as the sweet spot.

But of course they also have versions with cameras built in as well.

I'm just amazed that out of 37 members 7 + 1 soon to be people have got the same make of Intercoms. I'd never heard of Sena before (it's the name of a fanatical Hinu organisation over here).

Now I want one, and to quote GPJake @haqzore "Well I never even wanted one until this thread was made.... Which one of you can I refer my wife to for explanation? :angelic:"
Instead of group buys, we need group blame! :joyful:

OK, got round to looking at these, and the place I was looking at has sold out of the SMH-10R Dual packs but has the SMH-10 Dual packs.
Does anyone know what the difference is between the R and non R versions? I've had a look at the sena website and other than looks I can't see a difference.

https://support.sena.com/hc/en-us/a...-difference-between-the-SMH10-and-the-SMH10R-

What is the difference between the SMH10 and the SMH10R?
Sena10/27/2016
  • The SMH10R has a smaller form factor and operates using only 3 buttons, the plus (+) button, the center button, and the minus (-) button.
  • The battery for the SMH10R is external and can be installed on the backside of the helmet whereas the SMH10 has an internal battery.
  • The SMH10R comes with the Universal Microphone kit whereas the SMH10 comes in two different packages, the Speaker- Microphone Clamp Unit - Basic Kit (SMH10-10) or the Speaker-Microphone Clamp Unit with Universal Microphone Clamp Kit (SMH10-11).

Great summary. One particular difference that was missed is that the SMH10R is affixed to the helmet via adhesive whilst the SMH10 uses a bracket attached via clamp or adhesive. The unit is detachable from this bracket.

I'm my case I've got brackets (which incorporates mike and speakers) attached to both my helmets and simply swap the unit between the two.

The R might also include an FM radio tuner, at least in the US there was a model that did.

Or maybe stated better, there is/was a model in the US that had an FM tuner as well.

The D stands for Dual and the -10 means that pack only has the boom (fixed) mike. The D-11 has both the wired (flexible) and boom mikes. The actual Intercom and speakers are the same so you have got the SMH10 Dual pack.

Just to clarify

I was originally looking at the SMH10R(D) until I saw that as well as having the Intercom fixed to the outside by adhesion, you also have the battery stuck to the back of the helmet.

Ive got the Smh 10 on 2 of my helmets, and a Smh 10C camera one on my Shoei. I also have the portable smh base that you can plug in headphones on with. I usually lend those out to rider friends that don't have it, so we can at least group talk

The SMH10D comes with additional adhesive mounting plates that I'll lend out as needed.

The unit itself with the boom mike is easily detached.

We changed the clamp/fitment for our SMH10s so that we could use custom moulded earplugs with monitors built in (clamp added headphone jack). I also like having a wired mic in the helmet much tidier than the boom mic on our Scala G4s.
Only downside is that the glue holding the Velcro on the back of the mic gave up and the mic used to slide down/off. I swapped it for some sticky Velcro from a craft shop and that's been totally secure.

The reason for wanting to hear the o/h rather than the sat nav is that she could be saying "Watch out for that... in 200 yards turn right" I'd rather know what I should be watching out for!

I don't use a sat nav at all after the failed attempts with listening to it and the iPhone/Google maps switching off, I keep looking at getting a handlebar mount so that I can see the map rather than hear it (assuming it doesn't switch off).

I use my Ram mount + phone for navigation for this reason.

I've never "listened" to navigation, even in a car. I always just look.

been using the sena SMH10 for a few years now - only came with boom mike but got the accessory pack so now have the wired mike.
Never used it to its full potential..more than one other in group, or phone, or satnav or music. My music scares me :vamp:

I hate riding without music on , or not talking to someone. A lot of times I don't listen to the music, much like my car. I only have it on for background noise.

I have the Sena SMH10 that fits in my Bell Qualifier helmet. I use it to listen music, get indications from Google Map and make/receive phone calls; never used the interphone mode yet. I can use the google assistant by just saying OK Google in my helmet. The Google assitant can also start the Music App for me if I do not start it before riding. It is easy to operate even with thick gloves.
I Have much more fun riding since I have my sena SMH10. Still hearing the wind at high speed so I need to pump up the volume, I should check the possibility of using earbuds instead of using the Sena cheap headphone.

Will see how much Sena will sell this helmet with integrated noise reduction: https://www.sena.com/product/noise-control-helmet/
