CB650R Engine light

Hello legends, I have a 2022 cb650r I purchased for an absolute bargain from a mate of mine who was leaving town. I purchased the bike with an engine light on, basically what happened was he rode the bike to work all fine and dandy with no engine light. As it was parked at work we believe an air line was let go and while retracting has struck the throttle position sensor causing visible damage to only the sensor and it sat there for many months in this condition with the battery disconnected.

I have since replaced the entire throttle body assembly with injectors as a brand new part sourced from Honda hoping this would sort the issue. The bike now revs fine with only a sometimes slight hesitation from idle whereas before it would not rev borderline whatsoever. However after replacing the throttle body assembly the engine light remains, I've done the dtc read procedure and it has the 8 flashes for the TP sensor dtc. I have tried clearing the code and it flashes rapidly as if it has cleared however the engine light remains. I have also tried multiple heat cycles to clear it but also without success. It is also accompanied by the abs and traction control lights which I believe from scouring this forum is normal to be brought up with the engine light. I have spoken to Honda service guys and they tell me that I will need to bring it to them for them to put their scan tool on it to clear however when they asked what modifications are done I was truthful and told them it had been derestricted and tuned by the previous owner in which they basically told me they wanted nothing to do with it and to revert the bike back to factory before bringing it to them. I am happy to take it to a shop to get the code cleared if I have to however where I live and where they are located is quite some distance away.

I was wondering if you absolute legends would possibly have some advice on maybe a throttle position relearn or calibration procedure I may be over looking? Also, the traction control/abs lights that accompany the engine light does that mean the ABS pump will not operate and I run the risk of locking the front wheel if I snatch the front brake to hard? In all honesty it's been a good decade since I last owned/rode a bike so I'm not the most confident rider as of right now and I am definitely erring on the side of caution before I just jump on it and see what it does with a good ride.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you for your time.

I've done the dtc read procedure and it has the 8 flashes
You should be getting a 2 digit readout from this, a series of long flashes followed by a series of short flashes. An error code of just 8 doesn't exist for the IUU (AUS/NZ) model's DTC index in the service manual. Can you get a recording of the CEL flashing so we can confirm the code?

The service manual states;
The MIL has two types of blinks, a long blink and short blink. The long blinking lasts for 1.3 seconds, the short blinking lasts for 0.3 seconds. One long blink is the equivalent of ten short blinks. For example, when three long blinks are followed by six short blinks, the MIL is 36 (three long blinks = 30 blinks, plus six short blinks)

So I'm assuming you're either getting 8 long blinks and 1 short blink or 7 long blinks and 1 short blink, your error code is likely either 8-1 or 7-1, but without being able to confirm, I'm just guessing.

It is also accompanied by the abs and traction control lights which I believe from scouring this forum is normal to be brought up with the engine light
Do you mean while reading the DTC? If so than yes, they will remain on. But I don't think either of those lights would stay on while riding just because your CEL is on, unless you fault has symptoms/fail-safes that affect those systems.

I am happy to take it to a shop to get the code cleared if I have to
Once you believe you've found and fixed your fault, you can clear the code yourself by following the steps listed in the service manual, as follows;

How to erase the DTC with SCS short connector
1. Connect the SCS short connector [1] to the DLC [2] (page 4-9).
2. Turn the ignition switch ON.
3. Disconnect the SCS short connector from the DLC.
4. The MIL will light for approximately 5 seconds. While the MIL lights, short the DLC terminals again with the special tool. The self-diagnostic memory is erased if the malfunction indicator goes off and starts blinking.
I would assume if the CEL stays on after this, your fault still exists, but not entirely sure if the power needs to be cycled for the fault to present itself again or not.

Good luck!

Hey mate, thanks for your response. Here's a video attached of the dtc blinking/reading.

As for the traction control/ABS lights being on they are on with the engine running, the ABS light does not blink during the dtc read procedure however I believe I just have to reach 10kph to remove that. I'm awaiting the weather to clear up abit before I put it on the road to test that theory. I'm also hoping this might clear my other dtc somehow 🙏

I have attempted the dtc clear procedure numerous times after swapping the throttle body assembly so either I'm doing it wrong(it flashes rapidly without ending until ignition is switched off) and I'll try again or as you stated my dtc is still currently present 😑

Cheers mate, I truly appreciate your help.

P.s Sorry about the .zip file, I tried uploading as a .mp4 and a .mov but neither would work and my phone would not display what was acceptable other than .zip .txt or .pdf.

The dtc blink is simplified. Short flashes count for one, long flashes count for ten. Add them together to get the first part of the code.

8 short flashes would be 8-something as a code.

Sub codes can only be read via odb.

This is what I thought, I did put in a fair amount of effort scouring this forum and also the manual before i posted. 8 code being the throttle position sensor. Would you legends think that possibly the bike will calibrate itself if I put it on the road and take it for a decent ride?

The diagnostic procedure basically says check the wiring and if all good swap the tps for a known good one(again 😒) or the ecu. I can't really see how it would be either at this point so I was hoping for some kind of calibration procedure or KAM reset, something along those lines.

Thanks again for your help legends, I really appreciate it.

I might be confusing this forum with another but I seem to remember someone replacing the TPS and it had to calibrated by a dealer for it to be recognized. It was a year or so back, though. Something like it had to be reset by the Honda software for it to be recognized. I think they replaced the entire throttle body system as well.

If it helps, this procedure was given by a Honda engineer.

Throttle Position Sensor Reset Procedure:
  1. Key ignition ON then OFF then ON. Don't start the engine just leave ignition on
  2. Turn throttle from zero position to full throttle 3 times
  3. Turn ignition key OFF and wait a few seconds
  4. Turn ignition ON then start the bike and test ride
