CBR650F Engine damage through Accident

Yesterday I had a low sider with my 2 month old bike. Going through a corner my tire slipped away.
I still don't know how it happened since I was going quite slow an my lean angle wasn't really high.

Anyways:
Everything looked fine and I thought I only had to replace some parts. When my bike arrived at the honda service they had really bad news for me.
There is a leak in the engine where coolant is coming out. They said I may have to replace the whole engine!! I am not an expert so I wanted to hear you opinion.

The part that broke is the link between the engine and the frame, where the framesliders are attached.

The overall “damage” to the bike doesn’t look bad but your case is exactly why I’m leaning more and more against “frame sliders” as certain designs do more damage than good. It all depends on how and where you fall if they help or not, in your case they didn’t.

Looking at your engine mount in the second pic, you can see the long, stiff bolt that the slider attaches to torqued the engine mount and broke the engine case. Depending on what cracked and what broke underneath you’ll at the very least need the engine cases welded, at the worst need them replaced. I’m thinking you’re looking at a totaled bike regardless.

Without the sliders you’d have scuffed engine covers and have to replace some bodywork, a couple hours, couple hundred dollar slide.

Very sorry to see this Vector, it could happen to any of us with frame sliders,just a bad day for you.
If it was my bike i would ask honda for a strip and access first to get the total cost before deciding which
way to go.I only hope you have insurance on your bike.Best of luck! Maybe a engine overhaul shop might
be a better choice than honda?Just for the record, i went down twice with my frame sliders on and no damage.

The 650 engine has most of its cooling system internally. If you're leaking coolant from the engine then I expect an insurance write off.

You may be able to find another engine from a breakers yard and do a repair... But it will be costly.

This is horrible! 😞 I'm really sorry. I have a new bike too so you have my sympathy.

I'm not an experienced rider and I bought a brand new bike, so I wanted some protection. Some cool looking Rizoma maybe I thought, but Rizoma is not compatible with the '18 model or not available at all (?). My dealer gave me two options instead:
1. SW-Motech frame sliders (the same as yours on the pictures)
2. GSG-Mototechnik (never heard of it).
I had no experience or knowledge about the products but the SW-Motech looked cool so I chose that one. The dealer said that SW-Motech has only one mounting point, but I was like, the Rizoma too and I'm sure these companies know what they are doing and what is necessary for the appropriate protection. Later my dealer called me to say that they can't order the product because SW-Motech don't sell it anymore. They will create a new version soon, but it will take a few month. So I ended up with the GSG and after reading your story and checking your pictures, I feel, I was lucky. This one has two mounting points and I hope, it can't do such damage. Or am I wrong?

First I didn't like the look, but later I got used to it, and now I like it even more.

After all of this I'm wondering if these bigger companies are closing production of frame slider with one mounting point because of these accidents? Do they know that their product can cause such a damage if the bike slides? They call it "frame sliders (!)" and it is not cheap. It should protect the bike during a slide (!), or at least don't do more damage! I know these protection devices have their limits and I can't expect to protect my bike from every damage in every type of crash, but I think it is not too much to ask not to total my engine. Do these companies have some responsibility?

Or maybe this is only my bad conspiracy theory and no matter if you buy a one point or multi point slider or use no slider at all, one way or an other you can get fucked and this time you had simply bad luck... I don't know.

I feel for you.
Two weeks ago I had my bike valued for part exchange and confirmed trade tomorrow, 3 years old immaculate condition ( I was asked if I actually rode it). On the Monday last week, bang! I still do not know how it happened but I managed to wipe out myself and my wife in a low speed crash she was stationary at the time on a new shiny red bike less than a month old. I think I hit her rear tyre (she was stopped at the stop sign thingy) but it sheared the crash bung/mushroom clean off on the left which then slammed into the middle of the Fairing denting that, and somehow the bike then lands on its right side, damaging engine casing, and lower fairing, Crash Bung fine on RH, but road camber doesn't help, the lower section of the RH Engine casing scratch, did it happen when bike went down or when picking it up I have no Idea, but why did Honda make one huge casing, why not split it, ahh its cheaper to make, crap! its more expensive to replace.
Anyways totally Damage Black bike and replacement: LH Middle Fairing piece, LH Indicator, RH Lower Fairing, RH Engine Casing, RH Indicator, RH Handle Bar, then a scratches to bar end and lever. Red Bike = Snapped ball off Clutch lever and a scratch on the LH Hand Bar End (it has no crash bungs or mushrooms, the dealer recommended not fitting them) Italy 1 Japan 0.

If your insurance can prove the aftermarket product failed and caused the damage you can bet your asss they will get their money out of them.

All I can say is the dealer who I buying the RED bike from does not recommend fitting them as they can cause more bad than good, but as the case with most falls no two are alike. I have them on my green bike and they saved me lots of pennies.

Gyula, With the mounting points i have 3 on my sliders but that was not the problem with Victors bike,his single point held,
it was how he came down,with great pressure on the crankcase.As i said i have come down twice at low speed turning on a very
slippery roads a few little scratches,easy to fix.And yes i think the manufacture should have some blame,and sorry to here
about your bike Ir72 sometimes shit happens.

Maybe I'm wrong but on the second picture it seems to me that the mounting point broke off from the engine case. I see the scratches on the crankcase. I think the slider hit the ground first, broke off the mounting point and only after that the crankcase hit the floor and got scratched.
Anyway...
multiple mounting points -> pressure transferred to multiple points -> less pressure on a single point -> less likely to break

The first picture is vector's bike which is red, and vector's second and third picture shows the slider after the accident and the slider has held but maybe didn't stick out far enough.
I can see the blue cbr has the engine mount has a wider gap than on vector's bike with parts broken off ,this may have happen due to incorrect torque placed on the sliders.I had to buy
my own torque wrench. In thailand, as it is a tool never used in my area. I still think sliders are still worth having, again good luck to vector.

Right now the bike is at an official honda dealer. They stripped it down and will send me a damage report on monday. Afterwards I will decide what I am going to do. In the worst case (and probably the most realistic one) I own 200kg of scrap metal.

The insurance doesn't cover it, since it was my fault....



At least I found out what the reason was. The reason for the crash.

There was a crack in the road, exactly in the Apex. I accelerated and my tire slipped away.

I think most of the time frame sliders will save your bike... I searched a lot in other forums and only found 2-3 people which had the same problem as I had. Compared to the other hundreds of riders whose frame sliders saved their bike, this is nothing. Just really bad luck.

On the other side I will never mount such frame slider on my bike again. Your option looks way better!! At least function wise

I dont have full insurance :( I don't have the money for it. The price for the bike was 6.500€ and I am still a student. My income isn't very high. I could only afford it because I sold my last bike.

The insurance I have is 300 a year. Full coverage costs over 1000€. Way too high for me. That's what I thought at least. You are always smarter afterwards... Really dumb decision. Comparing the 1000€ against a new bike.

Yes Vector,all is not lost if the case can be fixed and i don't see why not than just a gasket and seal kit maybe
all you need.Again bet of luck!
