All 650Rs CB650R vibrations. An agony road. Don't be me.

Hi there :)

I want to share my experience with you, so you don't have to repeat my agony. Also If you can help me, will be appreciated.
NOTE: If you don't have any issues and want to help with some knowledge, please go to the last part.

I have a CB650R '22 with 24000km and some "enhanced" vibrations since first service all the time. Before that, I'm sure that was a bit less.
But around 4000 up to 6000rpm, between 90 and 120kmh , the right side of the handlebar feels a heavy vibration that sleep my hand. Now, after seconds service, still trying to fix it...

Disclaimer:

- Default configuration. Just two side protectors.
- 10W30 Repsol (Honda) (If I trust the workshop).
- It happens more when the motor is hot, at 4th line of temp.
- I have a correct, relaxed grip and posture. I hold the handlebar like a very appreciated part of my body...
- I've tried another CB650R and a CBR650R. Both have similar vibrations and harmonics, of course, but not the same way exactly as mine.
- Wheels seems ok and balanced. If I press the clutch on road I can't feel any vibration.

Things I've done so far to find the cause:

- Went to two official workshops : "Everything is ok" was the answer. (I don't trust one of them) They don't tried the bike on road. Just accelerating on neutral. That way doesn't feel so bad.
- Checked as many bolts I can. On correct torque. I didn't saw anything strange.
- Checked the oil quantity. It's on range.

Things I've done for reduce the vibrations, ahead of the cause:

- I placed two heavy end bar weights from HVMP. Helped a tiny, tiny, tiny bit up to 4000, but I think it makes even worse on the critic range I mentioned. Doesn't worth it.
- I've tried grip puppies and helped a bit more, but the feel of handling a big dong doesn't feel quite nice. I lost a bit of precision.
- I've filled the handlebar with lead shot and sand. It make it worse. I thing it's because the inner weights are not isolated now. Tried with original weights and hvmp.

Things I want to try:

- I will stop pouring weight on the handlebar since it's being worse with every experiment.
- I saw two clear cases on this forums of MAP sensor cleaning and fixed the vibrations. Where is this sensor and how to clean it easy?
- I saw many cases of this problem after an oil change. I want to change the oil for a Motul.
- You think a dampered handlebar mount can be mounted on street bikes or can be dangerous? Like this.

What else I can try? I'm lost right now and my desire to take the bike has vanished.

Thank you :)

My bike ('23 cb with 26k KM) had really bad vibrations, specially noticeable above 7-8k rpm.
I took it in for service recently and it's back to normal levels.
I asked them to retorque my engine mount bolts and change oil+filter. I was previously using motul 7100 10w40 and switched to honda hp4s 10-30.

I cant say whether it was the oil or the bolts but most likely the bolts.
As for the MAP sensor, you'll just need to lift the tank and remove 1 screw to take it out. Look it up to see what it looks like, very easy to spot. They make cleaners specifically for MAP/MAF sensors, be sure to use one of those.

Start with retorquing the engine mounts, not checking to see if they are tight but loosening them and retorquing in the proper order. Same with your handlebars and forks. Be sure your chain and clutch lever are adjusted and lubed properly, also be sure your wheels are balanced and the rear wheel is true.

Then do an oil change to a good quality, correct viscosity fully synthetic oil.

The heavy bar ends SHOULD help provided they are screwed in correctly and the inner weights are isolated and correct. You could also try ordering a set of Sato bar end weights with the inner weights that could also help.

Grip Puppies take time to get used to, once you do you’ll not have the imprecision feeling you have; handling a ”big dong” as you put it takes practice if you’re not used to handing big things. Pun intended, as well as not intended; Grip Puppies have an adjustment period.

Has your bike ever been crashed? Are you the original owner? What mods were done to it, even if it seems inconsequential at the time of the second service? Are you a good shifter or are you a bang-it-through-the-gears kinda rider? It could be the clutch or clutch basket.

Or some bikes just are more vibes than others, we’ve read about that with these 650s throughout the years. Certain people are also more susceptible to 4cyl vibes than others, I know I am.

Grip puppies helped my hands and adding a tooth to the front sprocket helped with over all vibrations for longer trips. Yes, it does slow acceleration and you’ll never max out in 6th gear. However, your speedometer will read correctly, you’ll get better gas mileage and loose the most of the vibrations at 100 kph. Weird things I’ve noticed, my right hand is usually fine, maybe because of the throttle tube. My left hand is the side I’ve issues with but I’m pretty sure it’s because I’m left handed and it’s a solid bar on that side. Hopefully you’ll find a solution that involves keeping the bike.

Hi there,

After some days of trying things, I don't won anything.

Answering to some questions: I'm the only owner and never crashed. The only mods are different mirrors and cabron fiver exhaust pipe cover. But the problem came before that.

-I've retorqued everything. Engine, handlebar, fuel tank, suspension, plastics...
-I've tried more and less torque on every part just for science. 0,0 difference.
-I've cleaned the MAP sensor
-I've checked for some errors and measure lectures from an OBD tool.
-Replace mirrors and axhaust pipe cover for the original ones.
-Mount a dampened handlebar mount.

The only thing left it's change oil. But will be worthless I assume.
Tomorrow I will fit the grip puppies. I've tried before and doesn't help that much.

So... it has to be the engine. But since the official dealer, If they don't see a engine light "it's ok"...

Please keep updating us if you find something. I also have vibrations on the handlebar above 6k rpm, in my case could be because I took out the OEM inner weights to put the LSL mirrors/bar ends.
My plan is to put the inner weights again with the LSL bar ends and see if they are reduced, if not, retorque all bolts and change handlebar for a Rizoma. I've read on some posts that it helped with vibrations idk (I also hate OEM heandlebar narrow width).

Hi there.
I was doing another lot of things but none of them fix anything.

Now, with grip puppies, it's feel a tiny bit less, but vibrations still sleeping my fingers after 40-60mins of highway above 100kmh.
I've changed the oil for a 10w30 Motul with no positive results.

I will make a custom, longer and heavier inner weights with the same shape as originals. Maybe this will change something.

You sure it's not the mirrors? Depending on which you installed and if they're bar ends and tempered with the weights in the bar i read it could cause vibrations

Check your front wheel weights are still there.
A incorrectly balanced front wheel will give you decent vibration and adding weight anywhere will exasperate the problem.

100% Sure. The issue started after 12k service.

Hi viper, any update on this issue? Have you tried throttle bodies and fueling, it seems like you might have an issue with the if to fuel ratio. And the throttle body is out of sync.

I was able to reduce my vibrations after I did the following
- Loosen up my chain tension
- Slightly loosen up engine mounting bolts then retorque them to the right spec
- Adjust chain slack to the maximum recommended slack - 48mm

There's also a device called Active Performance Dampers for CB/CBR 650R, that you mount in the frame and suppresses the vibrations.
It's newly available in my country so I might try it soon if I can get feedback from those who have used it.

My CBR650R is buzzing a bit between 4-6k rpm. Nothing too serious, and the dealership said it is fine on the first 1000km inspection.
Still, I always want to get rid of the vibration. And then I came across the Active Performance Damper on the internet.
I put on my bike at around 7000km, and I have ridden 3000km with it installed. Just don't hold your breath for any meaningful improvement...

Best wishes to OP in solving the vibration problem!
