Has anyone replaced the tank on a 21 cb? I can’t get straight answers from partzilla, or Honda, or dealers, in regards to if the tank comes with the Honda decals on them or not. Honda and dealers look at the diagram and don’t see the logo on the picture and then say logos are available extra. But 2020 models definitely come with the logos on the tank and also offer the logos as a purchasable part number. I removed the warning labels on my tank and it left me with two “fade” marks from where they were and they aren’t going away so I elected to just replace the tank. I can’t imagine Honda changed the process for the tanks from 2020 to 2021 models especially since they clear coat over the logos. Any and all advice is appreciated thanks

How bad are the fade marks? Have you talked to body shop to get a cost to repair vs. replacing the tank? I can't imagine that a repair would be anywhere near the cost to replace the tank.

After rereading your reasons, why not just replace the stickers?

Be a lot cheaper than a $675 tank.

They are definitely noticeable at almost any angle. Even more so outdoors. The issue being the flat black paint is not an easy fix. Tank cost just shy of 500. Body shop would likely be close to the same. Maybe a hundred less or so. And I will likely list the tank for sale on here when I do the job, Which will recoup some cost. I figure someone won’t be as picky as I am and may have a project in mind or dented there tank and want a replacement at a lesser cost.

Tank may cost that much from the dealers. But it’s only 400s from prtzilla for factory oe parts. They sell so much the discounts they get are insane. And that goes for all parts not just tanks or even for just Honda.

In the 400s*

I'm intrigued by what caused the issue. I removed the warning stickers on my matte grey Rebel tank and also the name from the rear fender and had no fading or damage to the paint. I used WD40 to remove the residual adhesive and when I wiped it off the finish matched the rest of the paint perfectly like they were never there.

I'm being nosey here, but would you mind sharing the details of what exactly happened to save someone else from going down this very expensive path?

I believe OP is referring to this post: https://650f.bike/threads/ghost-decals.4129/

I actually had the same outline when I removed the same stickers on my gas tank- though being the chromosphere red I was able to use some paint polish to get the shadows to disappear. Though, on my bike, the stickers were applied for over 1 year before I bought it (2019 model purchased new in 2020), and I figured it was due to UV degradation of the clearcoat. I would not have expected to see those outlines on a bike that is seemingly much newer.

H @Harley1905 - did you try cleaning the area with alcohol and a rag as I suggested in your other post?

Yes I did, and it didn’t remove still.

All I did to remove my stickers, keep in mind this bike was all of one day old in my possession at this point and a week on the dealer floor, was get the main layer off, slight adhesive was left and I removed that with a little goo gone (safe for the finish) and that’s it. Outlines left behind. It’s not a terrible issue as much an annoyance because the bike is brand new. Maybe 200 miles on it. And it has the marks. Had I done this a year or more from now in the Florida sun, I’d understand. My only guess is the adhesive in the stickers does this to the paint. I dont know how soon they lay the sticker at the factory. If the paint isn’t fully cured and the adhesive chemicals get to it? No clue. But Matte makes it more challenging because you aren’t just polishing. I’d of killed for gloss black for the current model, or even the matte silver, at least that wouldn’t of shown as easily. I wonder if a 2020 tank is the same as the 2021……
That said my new tank is on the way. With new seals for the pump, after tax, just over 500. Really not bad but definitely not great. I only hope that the tank is in fact with logo. I know I’ve been told on here that they should be. I just don’t like when multiple Honda reps say no and multiple say yes.

Darn, that's too bad that cleaning it off didn't work for you. Fingers crossed that your new tank has the logos.

Yea. I really can’t imagine it won’t. 2020 models do, 2019 do, every tank I can see actual photos of that honda sells has them on it. I just can’t wrap my head around them not on this particular year. Especially when I’m fairly certain the 2020 to 2021 tanks are identical. I can’t confirm that otherwise I’d buy the matte silver and have one of the only matte silvers in the states since As far as I know that’s a euro color. But I will keep everyone posted. With photos as well. I suppose even without the logos it wouldn’t look terrible.

I would simply replace the warning lable with a new one.
I removed mine after 2 years, I was afraid of ending up with that problems, but it was fine. Zero fading.
