CBR650F Throttle Restrictor removal

Hi all,

I've just recently passed my test and would like to de-restrict my CBR650F back to full power. It's a 2017 model (not that they look much different before then) however the restriction is on the throttle, not ECU.

I was hoping you folks might know an easy way of doing this? It seems to be quite well tucked in between the throttle body of the engine, and perhaps removing the fairings won't do much to help.

Has anyone done this and if so, which way did you go about it? One way I thought could work would be to remove the fuel tank and air filter and go for it that way?

Best wishes
Chris

Hi Chris, are you sure the restriction on your bike is only on the throttle? I thought it’s Normally a restriction on the air intake, ECU controlling the amount of fuel the engine is getting! (But I’m no expert on this)

Hi there,

That is one of the ways people restrict theme but mine is 100% a throttle restriction. It only gives me like 40-50% throttle.

I can see the movement of the cable, however the plate holding it back is quite far into the bike.

Here's a video of it further:

Best wishes

Yeah I see, it’s fairly deep inside the engine! Never now they did a restriction on just the throttle only. (never owned a bike that was restricted)

It also stops the airflow, they're linked! Had a deep look into it today and was stopped from making any progress past the airbox due to threading screws :( I think I'll book it into a mechanics

I'll update this next week for future reference

Best wishes

can you get to the restrictor with a dremel with a cut off wheel to cut the stop off ?
I don't think you can. Unlike the MT-07 for example, it's quite deep under the throttle body and not easily accessible.

I actually tried to remove it myself, and had to stop once I got to the airbox removal. There are around 10 screws on it, and they're very cheap, crap screws. 2 of them immediately threaded and ripped apart - this meant I couldn't go any further down and had to give up on my DIY mission.

I've since taken it to a mechanics who managed to cut the screw off and remove the throttle restriction - £262 to do this!! this includes a small black plastic trim that they had to cut off to release the screws, however the part only came up to around £30.

Ok fine, the restriction was off and the bike is at 100% power again. This was great, however on my ride home I started to smell very potent petrol fumes from the bike. It only got worse by the time I got home. It didn't seem to be coming from the exhaust but actually from the engine area, with the smell being un-burnt fuel. I called the garage back this morning to get a mechanic to have a look at this. Any ideas?

UPDATE: I took the bike in the following Monday - They gave me another courtesy bike and off I was to work. I collected my bike back on Tuesday to find out the mechanic had forgotten to link the second fuel breather line back.... What!?!?

This was at Fowlers of Bristol - I recommend you avoid this place like the plague - great to look at bikes, however they're clearly only concerned with milking you for all your money and not do a decent job. They charged me £262 to remove the throttle restrictor and ended up risking my life by not connecting the fuel line... the bloody FUEL LINE!!

I've since spoken to them, and they would not offer me any sort of compensation apart from an apology and "50% off your next service" - HAHA, as if I'd take my bike back to them!

next time at wherever workshop, ask them to take a test ride before they give the bike back to you. But glad to here that the problem is solved and your bike is 100% full power now

Although hard to believe, they did test ride it a few times according to them. They did have the bike for a total of 2-3 days.... But thanks anyways man! Haven't ridden much since the change, as the weather has been crap. Just purchased a black widow Pipe off eBay for a good price - need to clean her up, install it and service bike ready for the new season!
