Hey fam! Just bought a used 2019 cbr650 with 5k miles on it. Trailered it home because I live in Idaho and it’s still very snowy here.
The guy I bought it from said most of the miles are track miles, which I thought nothing of. I got home and turned it on a bit. The first 20 seconds of it being on, the exhaust smelled heavily of unburned gas. That’s normal right? Just the bike enriching the engine for a cold start? It is below 32f here.
Other than that the bike is beautiful the stock pipes are much louder than I thought they would be.

Anywho, very excited to be part of the 650 family!

Welcome!!! Yes, it’s fairly normal for a bike to have a rich smell at initial startup since the ECU generally dumps quite a bit of extra fuel to help the bike start from cold. That’s one reason why it’s so easy to flood the bike if you do a few quick start-and-shutdowns without letting the bike warm up.

Welcome!!! Wonder if it’s a members old bike.……

My year old 6250 mile UK CBR650R doesn’t smell particularly of un-burnt petrol (gas to you) but if it hasn’t been used for a while the bike might richen the amount injected if their was any delay in fuel getting through to the cylinders.
TBH I would only worry about the track miles if the exhaust was smoking (burning oil) or oils consumption proves high when you start riding it.
Looks like you’ve got some upgraded front fork cartridges (might be the same at the back too) which may be a bonus, does the bike have a stock exhaust? It might be a race exhaust if it’s been a track bike which might account for it being louder than expected!
I can recommend a Quickshifter (OEM Honda) as I fitted one to mine and I love it.
If it’s done 5,000 truck miles might be worth an oil and filter change even if it’s not due a service as track miles are harder on the engine than road miles.

Enjoy your bike, looks great 👍

Just looked up the front fork cartridge kit fitted to your bike!
That’s $1,500 of extras right there! So not quite stock!
No Quickshifter thought which I think is a quick relatively cheap DIY mod, lots of YouTube vids showing you how!

Here’s the link for your front fork cartridges ….

Shoot, had no idea. The bike was gifted to the guy I brought it from, from his dad who bought it new and for the track. Nice cartridges you say? I got quite the bargain then. $6500
As far as the gas goes. That is what I’m hoping. It’s currently at the dealer getting a full inspection (I didn’t want to do it what with the -20 degree weather we are having).
Thanks guys love the support. I will hopefully be on here quite a lot. The camaraderie is very refreshing!

I just rode it home from the stealership, and I think I may know why the stock exhaust seems extra loud.
When I turned it on to idle for a moment before riding away, I noticed exhaust steam coming from a small hole in the very bottom of the stock pipes. Close to where the cat would be located. I’m imagining that some work has been done in there 😤
also the rear shock had some mods as well.

There normally is a small weep hole in the exhaust for moisture to escape, so that may not be anything but that. Without a pic it’s hard to say.

That‘s a completely different shock. You have a nicely setup bike.

I could be wrong but in your first picture I'm sure I saw the cat fitted? If so I can say there is a weep hole as michael said to allow moisture to escape on start up from cold especially you will see it pissing out especially if she is kept outside over night.

Normal behavoir unless it's coming from somewhere else of course.

Rowdy Bricco owned the bike before me. If that means anything to yah. He was from Texas.

Appreciate the responses. A “weep” hole sounds about right. It’s too frigid to get out there and take a pic, but it doesn’t seem like a drilled out piece. Makes me feel better.
