Just thought I'd share these pictures for anyone who's interested.

2021 CBR650R
Mileage: Less than 1000 miles
Issue: Oil drain plug came out on highway
Damage:

Spun rod bearings on both #3 and #4 rods.
Scoring on all four cylinder walls
Completely destroyed #4 piston
Wear on remaining piston skirts.
Wear on remaining crank bearings.
Damaged rings on cylinder #3 and #4

Cost of repair:

Rings: $80
Piston: $160
Rod bearings: $48
Crank bearings: $48
Gasket sets (A & B) $100
Machine shop: $450
Total parts: $316
Total labor hours & cost: 25 hours (minimun) @ $80 per hour (average) = $2000

Total repair cost: More than you wanna pay!

**This rebuild cost is on an engine with less than 1,000 miles on it. A typical engine rebuild will cost significantly more as more parts would need to be replaced!

Todays lesson: Don't run your bike dry!

It actually didn't happen to me. It happened to the original bike owner. He was so angry over the situation that he just gifted me the bike. He's pretty loaded so I'm sure it wasn't that big of a deal for him. Ended up getting the bike for completely free. Literally

Ouch he may be loaded but it’s still gotta hurt!
Begs the question who was playing with drain plugs at 1,000 miles ? Other than a dealer of first service?

Since I came to live here in Turkey 4 years ago where there are "Dealer's Authorized Service Stations" I took an oath not to do service by my hands or at local shops like I used to do before. I had no issue doing that before, but the risk was always there, and there were countless times when I had to fix something that the local shops broke fixing other things.

The main reason is to keep the responsibility to well-trained hands and to blame them when something goes off 😂. I have been servicing my 2016 HONDA CRV and 2022 HONDA CBR650R at the same service station with Maintenace Records coming to my email each time which can also be used as an advantage when selling.
I pay more of course but that keeps me away from one F#$k up that can almost cost me an engine, or worst, my life.

I miss my tools and garage back in Iraq of course, but instead I keep my hands busy with detailing the car/bike instead which in my opinion is far better than spending weeks waiting for parts or to get the oil from under my fingernails (damn that chain cleaning got my fingernails dirty for more than a week and still is).

Doing the service at the dealer is the best! they even give a full wash in addition to cups, towels and other stuff with HONDA logo for free.

Attached bill is the first service done a little bit late at 1500kms:
