All 650's Quick Turn Throttle Experience?

Hey,

Does anyone have a quick turn throttle on their CB650F or R, either a homemade mod to the throttle cam or a quick turn throttle like the G2 Competition Quick Turn Throttle?

I did a few searches on the forum but they turned up zero results. If you have experience with this on these bikes, I'd be interested in your thoughts on how it felt.

Cheers :)

I did not do it on my 650 but search R6 throttle tube in the 600RR forums. I’d imagine it’s the same procedure and I loved it on the RR.

Not sure if the R6 tube would fit on the cb650. Mainly wanted to get some idea of how it feels to have a shorter throw on the cb650 The G2 Competition Quick Turn Throttle Tube is made for the cb650, so maybe that's the best way to go. I think it isn't quite as quick throw as the R6 tube, but maybe that's a good thing all round.

I’m actually pretty sure it would. It takes some minor work to the housing but for like $20 it could be an easy thing. You can always go back.

So here’s my take: if you’re a rider that likes to twist the throttle and go from on throttle to off throttle a lots, it’s fun. Like on a track or a fast road when you’re on and off a lot it makes a ton of sense and a big difference.

Why I think Honda didn’t go with that quick a throttle turn is steady speed is a pain to maintain so any movement lurches you forward. Think of it like this: 5mm movement on the standard throttle might be 1/10 the motion of your entire throttle throw, on a quick turn it’s 1/6. So if you’re holding your hand steady going down the road and hit a small bump or move your hand a bit and you’re turning the throttle a bunch more. We have rough roads and there were times it was very lurchy to ride and got tiring. It’s why I did it to my old RR and not my 650F.

If you’re a point and shoot kinda rider, you’ll probably like it. If not, it’ll be more annoying than fun.

I rode one CBR650 with a short throw.
You will need cables also.
The throttle play is inexisting which i liked. The bike I tried had the most aggressive one. Was fun on closed track but couldn't blip anymore on downshift. At slow speed maneuvers was awful and I had to feather the clutch.

Thanks for these thoughts. It helps quite a bit. I ride some twisty roads that are fairly bumpy in sections, plus city roads. I do like to get on the throttle quickly and hard now and again, and when I do, I wish there was less travel to open up.

That said, I can now see it being an issue on those uneven twisties. Also, I wear a wrist brace on my throttle hand to control an otherwise somewhat jerky wrist movement in the twisting motion range. Perhaps I'd be flirting with trouble going with a quick turn throttle. If I don't wear that brace it can be pretty entertaining going through roundabouts and over bumps, lol. That brace though is also why opening up is sometimes awkward.

The G2 Quick Turn, being less aggressive than the R6 tube might still be an option. I use Grip Puppies though, and they give a quicker 'feel' to the throttle. The larger circumference seems to provide better leverage for the twist. Perhaps I'll leave it at that. Thanks for the good info.

Thanks Trippy. I was wanting to avoid the kits with cables and such. Your experience with that on the 650 is a downside I would not want to deal with. I love the smooth character of the bike. I'm thinking that I'll pass on the mod. Cheers :)

So I went ahead and installed the G2 Ergonomics Competition Quick-Turn Throttle. Here's a video with my thoughts on it:

I've OEM heated grips. If I install this will I have to make a choice between the two?
Unless your heated grips came with an attached throttle tube, the throttle side heated grip should fit over the G2 throttle tube. It's the same diameter as the stock tube as far as I could see. You can put whatever grips you want over the G2 Tube.

I just ordered the G2 10% quicker throttle for CB650R. I will let you know how it feels when it arrives. I also ordered some Domino Turismo grips to go with it.
