CB650R Replacing intake funnels

Hi Honda Club members,

I recently purchased in a CB650r and joined this club.

I live in Australia and here ''downunder'' Honda only sell the restricted model bike (LAM - Learner approved motorcycle - similar to A2 in the UK)

With the help of this forum i have obtained the spare part list and found the part number for the fully open air intake to be 17225-MJE-DB0

My question is would i notice a performance increase if I just replace the funnels alone without doing the ECU remap?

& If i dont perform the ECU remap could this harm the engine - Ie running too lean or rich? Has any one tried this before?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Mark,

If you replace just the funnels, the bike ECU will know and will fight the power delivery; you'll feel some more power but it's almost as if the bike is fighting back. The ECU will eventually (anywhere between 2 and 20 minutes into the ride) restrict your revs to 6000 RPM at random which can be quite dangerous if you're trying to overtake. The TCS light will come on and won't go off until you turn the bike off and on again. I wouldn't recommend just doing the funnels and instead remap the ECU as well if you're going to derestrict the bike. See this thread for more info about the 6k RPM problem:

In this instance, it was a fault with the ECU map getting confused with the quickshifter, and so it would restrict the bike to maximum half throttle. But it's the same symptoms in your case. Happened to me when I first got the bike and it is not rideable!

Sorry to tell you what you didn't want to hear.

Have a search on the forum, there are ways to get the ecu flashed. That's the easy bit. Getting the bike re-registered is apparently a right pain.

Hi Everyone

i have a 2020 May lams CB650R, my setup is

exhaust fully open
air funnels fully open
dynojet pcv

have fully tested the bike at each upgrade before moving to next, the only issue was after removing air intake funnels was that there was a power lag between 6500rpm which was patched by dynojet. Did not remap ecu due to cost and after sale issue with registration

with this setup I can revert the bike to Lams spec anytime

have rev bike extensively up to 10k rpm rides bike for 150 km and did not have any lock out or such issue.

the bike now has a top speed of 220km/h
and is a lot more powerful and fun to ride then before as i now can keep up with my mates with 1000cc bikes

regards

Hey mate, I'm looking to do the same. So you done the exhaust and the air funnels and then put a map on it with the dyno jet for the exhaust and that unrestricted the bike?

Hey!
Sorry but what do you mean by "Exhaust fully open"?

I thought only the funnels and ECU flash was needed...

Also, which map/tolls did you use? PC?

Cheers from New Zealand

Hi, I was also wondering if it would be better to buy the shorter intake funnels part #17225-MJE-DB0 or send my stock oem restricted funnels in to be professionally modified when I get an ecu flash tune.

I heard that the shorter full power funnels make a little more top end power than the restricted ones cut open, but I doubt you'd tell the difference. Mine came with modified restricted funnels and I didn't bother changing them.

I have bought a brand new 2023 CB650R and was told by the dealer that these newer models no longer require intake funnels changed, simply a map to reduce engine power to LAMS spec. Can anyone confirm this?
