Yes, very sad to know his daughter was with him and also lost her young life. I watched him play on TV a few times and, man, he was good!

Although I am not a basketball fan I do have a Kobe story:

I believe it was 1996 or 1997(?) and I was in Kansas City going to college after the Army. I got a job as the Hyatt's security manager and was working a late shift on the night that The Lakers were in town for an exhibition game or something (KC doesn't have a pro basketball team.)
Anyway, it had to be around midnight when the front desk calls me over the mic that there are two women here to see Kobe Bryant. Well, I had no ugly idea who "Kobe Bryant" was but I went, spoke with the women and they said they were friends.
I took them up to his floor, walked them down to his room and explained to them if he didn't know who they were they'd be escorted off the premises. So, I knocked on his door and it opens half way. Next thing I see is a young Kobe Bryant stick his head out. I asked if he was "Kobe Bryant" and he said yes. Then I asked if he knew these two ladies. He looks over at them and starts laughing. He then says, "Yeah, they're my cousins."

Now, not me to speculate, and this was prior to him being married, but my guess is they were some high $$$ call girls.

I learned later that this was Kobe's rookie year. And since I was on the graveyard shift I got to walk Shaq (who I did know!) out to the bus before I got off shift.
