2022 Honda CB650R's owner's manual says recommended viscosity is 10W 30. I have called my dealer to order oil to do my first oil change on the bike 1000K service.

When I told them 10w30, they said, we would recommend 10w 40. They said, if you bring your bike here for service, we will use 10w40 in your motorcycle. Do you think this is a reckless decision or 10w40 would just work fine? My location is in Ontario, Bellville, so the summer is humid and hot, but not scorching hot!

My understanding is the choice of viscosity is all about the location and associated temperatures the bike will be used in. Perhaps also a little bit about how the bike is ridden 😉

The 10W relates to performance at winter temps. where as the second number relates to performance at high temps. Oil with a 10W-30 grade thins out more quickly at high temperatures as compared to oils with a 10W-40.

Is there not a chart in the owners manual to help.

Think there may have been some previous threads on this.

You'll be fine with their recommendation of 10W40. In the summer heat in southern Ontario you'll be at the upper end of the 10W30 range. Either will be fine, but 10W40 would be best if you hit it hard and your summer temps are often in the mid 30s C.

Further thoughts:
I've always used 10W40 Motul 7100 ester-based synthetic. This year so far I'm using 10W30 Motul 7100. If our summer here in the Okanagan BC is a repeat of last year, where out temps reached mid to high 40's C (49°C was the highest), then I'll switch it out to 10W40. That said, a good quality synthetic 10W30 will handle high temps under high loads better than a conventional oil of the same viscosity; sometimes better than a 10W40 conventional oil. JIMO :)

Thank you for your response! Unfortunately, no! The only thing states on 2022 owner's manual is recommended viscosity

Thank you man! I would go with 10w 40 and then switch to a full synthetic!

It is a Honda, as long as there is oil (and gas) in it, it wil run. No problem running 10w-30 of 10w-40.
