darby_07 darby_07 and I spent a rainy couple of days cutting off the bottom and hollowing the stock exhaust from his CB650R. We figured if we completely screw it up it'd be no big deal as he has an akropoivc and I would just leave mine alone. The operation was a success, though, and I took off my exhaust and put on the one we modified.

Picture time:

I started off small, because we weren't sure of the internal layout, and I did not want to damage the catalytic converter.

Found the cat, so now we are good to go hacking out the baffling.

This is the only picture we took anywhere near fully hollowed. We cleaned it up a bit more before reassembly.

And now for the video:

This post was my inspiration, but I thought it would be beneficial to post these pictures as well because the internal structures of the mufflers are different.

I’m very interested to see a side by side video between that and the Akra. It may be something to tinker with over the winter.

We had both bikes together this afternoon, but failed to take a video. Maybe next time.

IMO, the modified stock exhaust is absolutely louder than stock and sounds better. The Akra is much louder, more of a deep and smooth note. We imagine the stock exit being 1/5th smaller and the remaining CAT versus the Akra is of course restricting flow and sound.

All in all, the modified exhaust is a definite improvement over stock. For a day of effort, we'd say it was a success especially with it costing >$1k less. He also doesn't need to wear ear plugs while riding, whereas I definitely do ;).

When you removed you muffler, did the joint at the header just slip out? I want to make sure I bring home any tools I will need before getting started.

The exhaust is a single piece. Starting at the head. You must unbolt the exhaust from the head.
