German Alpine Road

Hi folks,

I'm after some advice regarding an upcoming trip that I am planning, which is the German Alpine Road.

It winds its way West to east, or vice versa, from Lindau im Bodensee across to Schönau am Königsee.
My plan, starting from Ipswich in East Anglia, is to take the overnight ferry from Harwich to Hook, then ride to Düsseldorf where I shall board the Motorail and travel to Innsbruck.
Next meet up with my pal in Kitzbühel, and ride to Schonau to start the trip.

If anyone has any experience of riding in Germany, using the Motorail, riding great alpine roads, is there any key points I should bear in mind?

Also, how many KM/hours would you suggest per day? Relatively relaxed, although I like a spirited ride.
My concern is trying to schedule the hotels as we'd like to do it in 2-3 days. Perhaps someone here has ridden the road before?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated, should be a great adventure and I hope to produce a video from it - which i shall of course post here!

Kind regards,

James Head

Sadly can´t recommend you something as I don´t ride in that region.
One thing I can recommend - if you never expirienced it before - is the Autobahn. Sure, generally a long straight road is not really something you would look for while sitting on a bike; but even for a few miles, going as fast as you want is something fascinating.
Also, when is your trip?

Yeah I won’t be doing too much Autobahn - having driven in the car from England to Kitzbuhel - i would rather not have BMW’s Audi’s and mercs coming past me doing at least 160kph, have managed to top out my bike on quiet roads here at 115mph.

Then at least you won’t have to be worrying too much about ice/grit/snow/slush in the alps! You planning on getting all the way down to Kitzbühel solo? Haven’t done them myself but I’d imagine trips of that length aren’t quite so much fun by yourself...

Yeah so as per OP I will take the MotoRail from Dusseldorf to Innsbruck. Then Innsbruck to kitzbuhel is only an hour and a half so not too far :)

The part from Munich to Innsbruck is the route i commute basically every weekend from university to my hometown munich!

I would suggest it as an half day to one day trip (3-4 hours of driving), depending on how much time you want to spend there.
It is probably on of the best parts of your trip. The roads and the view are fantastic.

Best part:
you can drive the "kesselberg". On of the most famouse motorcycle streets in germany. The only problem is that you must drive there during the week. On the weekends it is closed for motorcycles.

I would suggest not using the autobahn on this part of the trip. It is a little bit boring except that there is no speed limit.

The easiest way is just driving the B11 from Munich to Innsbruck. (Munich, Wolfratshausen, Kochel am See, Walchensee, Scharnitz, Innsbruck.)

If you want I can send you the a more detailed description with some improvements of the route, or maybe we can ride it together if you want and i have time.
