CBR650R MPG am I missing something?

All the reviews I’ve read and the claimed Honda MPG are 47 MPG (MCN) and 48 MPG Honda
I’ve finished running in and done the first service so I have started using the performance and just don’t see anything that low!
I know the office test profile won’t involve maxing the acceleration or revs so how come thebclaimed figures are so low?
Even if Hondas figures were US Gallons (smaller than UK imp Gallons) it wouldn’t explain MCNs !

For info I chased my son around on his new Ducati V4S yesterday (ex BSB Superbike rider) and I was Canning it and getting 57 MPG and on a more laid back ride home but on the twisty route with lots of brake and acceleration got 63 MPG
Was with nice super unleaded but still can see why Hondas claim is so modest?

Hmmm I average 5.0l (47mpg) and I don't drive aggressive at all, usually in 6th gear cruising so your claim of 63mpg sounds more wrong to me...

On my 2016 CB650F I usually do 4,2-4,7 liters per 100 km, depends on how hard i am pushing it, but never ever saw 5l per 100km on my dash. ( 95 octane E10 gas)

Well I’ve looked and
there are no options for picking US gallons and while I would expect super unleaded to give a bit more MPG but 3 or 4 extra tops and only if the ECU can sense the extra performance available from the better fuel and make use of it.

I did find this data from one user claiming 59 MPG over a few thousand miles!

But so far I’ve seen nothing under 57 despite giving it some full throttle not changing up till 10k rpm blasts. And until yesterday that was on standard unleaded too! Oh and on a Quickshifter now so not even stopping for some clutch work either!

Guess I need to do some full tank runs then top up to full and divide the mileage by the actual gallons used and see what it really calculates to!

Then moan at Honda if the bike can’t measure fuel use properly!

I am sure the fully faired version would get slightly better MPG than the cafe racer due to Aero but it still doesn’t explain the large difference.
Will post when I work anything out.

Just done some quick maths on approximate litres used yesterday at two top ups 14 + 10 + approx 6 litres used (gauge above half full at end) 340 miles plus another 50 miles done before yesterday since the preceding fill so 390 miles total for 30 litres comes to 58 MPG

Eek my head hurts.

Will fill up when I’m out on the bike next and then run it a hundred miles see what the bike claims and calculate it accurately when I refill it again and know exactly how much it’s used.

I will post my results.

Maybe keep notes on my phone and work out average over the next 1,000 miles.

On my 650F I get anywhere from 55 mpg Imperial which is 46 mpg US to 67 mpg Imperial which is 56 mpg US, depending on how I twist the throttle, and ambient temperature. I guess Honda's estimation is conservative.

Thought I was going mad there!
I am sure I could get to 67 or even a little better if I took easy accelerated gently and rode for economy (at least according to the Bike) I saw up to 66 on the way back yesterday before my need to get home saw me hitting 80 mph of the duels carriageway and briskly twisted throttle sections dragged it down!
But following my son yesterday on his ducati I wasn’t riding for MPG and it still never got below 57 !

Still plan on checking a few tanks for the real undisputed figure.
Also will check the Super Unleaded (E5) in the EU fuel and the normal You leaded (E10) to see what difference that makes.

Remember that tyre wear can also affect the numbers. As you lose the 3 or 4mm of tread the circumference alters, messing with the numbers.

You need to use GPS tracking and fuel going into the tank (at fill ups) over a large distance/number of fills to get an accurate reading.

Premium unleaded helps mpg only because of the lower ethanol content. The extra octane is wasted on our engines.

Hello.

I mainly commute and drive gently around town and nearby secondary roads, with some pulls in-between. Usually I get 4.5L/100Km.
This weekend I went with some friends for a 250Km ride, crossed Serra da Arribada mountain and when arrived home I had impressive 3.7L/100Km!

Also anything but the recommended octane is just wasting money. Using premium won't increase mpg or hp on this bike.

I use standard unleaded but my sons Ducati V4S has E10 Super unleaded recommended and that’s what it’s tuned for hence just easier to fill mine with the same when we rode together.

using E10 gasoline.

My bike is also restricted to 35kw but I can't imagine that having a bad effect...

I’m in the uk and back from a 180 mile tour of Norfolk , I’m on a 21 plate with 1600 miles on the clock , trip computer is saying 62.1 average mpg , I cruise at around 65mph and do overtake is required. I class my ride as a sightseeing tour today so just taking it steady. At the start of the tour the trip computer was saying 56 mpg

Well I have filled up the tank today and after the ride back from my sons house the other day which wasn’t slow but I wasn’t riding like I stole it.
Indicated fuel consumption at the garage was 61.6 filling the tank used 8.06 litres to cover 101 miles so people were right that the MPG shown I’d well on the hopeful side as that calculates to 56.52 MPG
So still way better than Honda claim for the bike and I definitely wasn’t riding it gently, was giving it some berries up and down the Pennine hills so I am still confused by the numbers.
I will keep an eye on what I achieve for a bit.
On the way back home from the fill up I took it down some quiet back roads and used all the power accelerating on a couple of miles and still got just over 60 indicated again!
Will see how it goes.

56.52mpg is still pretty amazing for a 650cc 4 cylinder. If I remember correctly I could sometimes get close to that on stock gearing, but now on 14/43 gearing I'm definitely on the lower end of the spectrum.
