All 650Rs CBR650R engine idle speed from cold

General question to all other owners of the 650R, how long does it take for the idle speed to drop from the initial 2000rpm at cold start-up to normal idle of just over 1000rpm? My bike seems to take about 3 minutes. This is first brand new bike I have had and my previous bikes and my current GSXR didnt/dont take that long. Do new bikes behave this way until they are properly "run-in"?

I would say that’s a little long if it’s a true 3 minutes, however with the newer environmental regulations it may take that long to heat the cat properly.

Have you timed it? Is it consistently that long? Personally, I’d not overthink it but maybe mention it to a dealer next time you’re there.

Time to idle will depend on IAT & ECT. Goal is to get the management into Closed Loop as quickly as possible. Most modern systems will move into CL on a preset timer (like 10-20 secs) but colder air and coolant will override that for drive ability purposes. Next time get us some actual times and ambient air temp.

It makes me cringe when people jump on a cold bike start it up and off they go. Get a car ! Your no biker.

I have a similar problem (if it is a problem). The bike CB650R will idle at 2000rpm for about three min until the temp gauge shows that the engine is warm. I don't have a problem with that, I had an SV650 years ago that did the same. The thing is that once the engine is warm it idles at 1300rpm, is this normal? It just sounds a bit high to me. I would have expected it to closer to 1000. Any info greatly received. Cheers.

How many miles has it done? As engine idle speed is something they check at the 600 mile service.

Higher idling speed is normal for a cold engine. Also, my CBR650F has terrible throttle response when the engine is cold. If it's warmed up after riding for 5 mins or so, it's fine again. When I leave home I don't really notice this as I live in a 30km/h zone, but when I leave work, I almost immediately turn onto a 80km/h road and it's very noticable. I wouldn't be surprised if the 650R has the same thing.
