Break in

New to the forum as I just picked up the 650F on Saturday. I asked he guy about break in as they did not have an owners manual. I guess they lost it. For break in he said no racing and "take it easy." I asked about RPM maxes and he said do not redline it or bog it down. Which I was like duh..no shit. Fuel wise he said 87 is fine. So what is the correct break in and what fuel octane should I put in? I will do whatever, but just want to do the right thing. Bike has 189mi on it.

I'm sure my answers are somewhere on the forums and I apologize in advance for what I'm sure is a repeat question.

Here you go, this is all it says in the manual regarding running in. Fuel octane rating says at least 91 or higher.

Tbh what he said is accurate, dont let it thump around in too low revs and only take it up in the higher revs once its nicely warm... Just ride it like you would when getting to know a new machine, and its going to be fine.

Running in or breaking in threads are a bit like countersteering threads.

When I got mine the garage said ride it normally forthe first 150-200 miles then give it beans.
If you are too gentle the engine won’t loosen up.

However this is my first band new bike so I’m really no expert.

Yea I just turned 200mi. The rain in the Eastern US is relentless. I will start going up in RPMs hopefully this week. I to am just getting into riding again. I would rather not ride beyond my capabilities.

The biggest reason they tell you to be careful the first few hundred miles on a new bike nowadays is so you get used to it before really going so your tactic and reasoning is sound.

In the old days there was special break in oil that couldn’t go more than 500 miles, you’d get metal shavings out for several oil changes and even in the sandcast engine days you’d get literally handfuls of sand that would come out over the first few changes. Even my 1998 Superhawk had shavings, particles and crap that came out for the first 3,500 miles of its life than was clean after that, so it’s a fairly new process to be so clean.

So I guess what I’m saying is when you’re ready to go, it’s ready to go. Enjoy!!!!
