Greetings friends,

Just realized that I never posted on here to take a victory lap and thank everyone for their help in trouble-shooting during my project.
Long story short:
  • Bought a 650F on facebook marketplace that was in a pretty chaotic state of disassembly, and in need of a new engine (old motor had thrown a rod and poked a hole in the cylinder block and the crank case).
  • Found an engine for sale on ebay that was about an hour from my house - a powersports shop has a side gig buying wrecked bikes at auction and ebay parting them out.
  • Trailered my 650F to their shop, and paid them an hour of labor to mount the engine in the frame.
  • Took it back home, and did the rest of the reassembly - required a bit of effort to find where all the wire harness pigtails plugged in, and i also had to replace the right handle bar and front brake lever, along with one of the fairings that was missing.

This is how it looked the day i bought it.

After the shop had hung the replacement motor in the frame for me.

All done - registered, insured, and riding around since September :)

There were just two minor issues in the firsst few months after getting it running:
  • Minor leak from one of the fork seals. Addressed that with a DIY seal mate
  • Weird failure to get in gear if the shifter shaft scooted out of the engine block by about a quarter inch. Addressed that with a small snap ring.

Smooth sailing since 😎

So I can help you with this one. The snap ring is a bandaid, the real fix is a $3 tab behind the clutch basket that likes to crack if your shift shaft receives any firm pressure on the inward direction.

Cheap piece to by, takes 30 seconds to replace once you pull the clutch cover and clutch basket. I’ve gone over the procedure on the forum before.
