Gear Hearing protection

So you people ride with hearing protection in? If so, what do you use? I normally ride without but realise that on extended highway rides the wind noise is becoming significantly loud.
I own this type of earplug that I use when playing with my band. I tried putting them in when taking a ride but I just can't seem to get my helmet on without popping them out of my ear. Very annoying. Anyone got any suggestions?

This is what I used, paired with my shoes NeoTech and the Sena 20s. It significantly cuts down on wind fatigue, engine/exhaust noise while still being able to hear my music or communicate on the phone and hear sirens or horns. They are very comfortable and recently this video showed a debate on ear pro. I am a huge fan of them and after riding 5 years, wish I would've gotten a pair sooner. If you are having trouble with them coming out you might not have them inserted far enough.

Hi Jerry - i use these http://amzn.eu/b3bB3FL they dont expand but do the same job - i like they don`t cut too much noise but the wind and allow intercom use etc - bluetooth speaker etc - cheap and come in a box to store when not in use. - for normal day to day i`d recommend. :)

I am that used to earplugs I cannot ride without them, just too much going on without them. I had the same problem as you with those sticky out ones. I use 3m earsoft fx sn39 they suit me. I bought a trial pack of all sorts to see what suited me the best. You can get a trial pack of the web.

Bought these about a week ago:

Amazon product

Cheap disposable foam ones. Once you get used to flattening them and putting them in at the right angle, it's total bliss when they expand to fill your ear canal. Noise reduction is exceptional. Been on the same pair for about a week could easily make a 50 pack stretch to a year. The Akrapovic system is so loud with no baffle it's definitely not wise riding without hearing protection if you've removed it like I have.

< Fatigue & headaches
> Concentration and comfort

Was thinking of spending ~£120 on custom plugs but not anymore.

SHOEI GT AIR + SCALA RIDER Q1 system + earplugs - SOUND BARREN (£20 or so from Amazon)

Don't fall for the expensive ones, the cheap ones do the same work, the key is to get the ear plug to seal correctly whether it be a ceramic filter one or the old school foam type.

if you are using earbuds for music while riding I suggest not to use it, get a proper comms kit. Incase of an incident if you are unlucky can hurt your ears when they yanked out at a force!

I use all varieties of disposable foam earplugs. I get them free from heliports and rigs. Got to use plugs and ear defenders on the choppers.

On the bike, the simple trick is learning to put them in far enough, they shouldn't be sticking out far enough for the helmet to rip them out.

I have used regular headphone ear buds for listening to music on the bike, but unlike in the car, I'm not really fussed about music while riding because my brain has plenty to be getting on with.

How's the sound with a comms kit? I use a Sena but I'm unsure if earplugs will make things worse or if they'll make the sound clearer yet still protect my ears?

Your comms kit don't protect your ears, any comms kit like Sena, Scala, are pretty good if the sound is not clear use bigger speakers i.e my scala came with 30mm speakers and upgraded to 40mm speakers. Make sure they fit your helmet though.

earplugs with a ceramic filter like the one I mentioned like Sound Barren (check Amazon) are good. You can still hear the music but windnoise is reduced massively.

Also make sure your helmet is well sealed under the chin using a chin curtain if your helmet has one. Not all helmets are equal so invest in a goood one usually Schuberth and Shoei have the quitest of the lot. Check online reviews.

I ride with a Shoei Qwest helmet and have the scala rider with larger uclear headphones. My bike has stock exhaust so overall the sound level is not a problem even though I don’t wear any ear plugs.

I don’t do much highway riding which helps with wind noise. It is too boring going straight at constant speed. I prefer roads with the word “canyon” or “valley” in their name.

One of the guys we ride with has an Aprilia and it is so f-n loud I won’t ride behind him anymore. He wears ear plugs and he should.

I know it isn’t cool to say it but I like that the stock exhaust on the Cbr650f is so quiet. Maybe I’m the only person that does ...

Jetflo69,You are right when you say riding behind someone with a loud exhaust can make you go deaf .Ever since i took out my

baffle on my termignoni exhaust no body wants to ride behind me anymore.Maybe one day, i might put it back in[for a day or two.]

Yes i think you are the only one?
