I see that the way to improve performance is with either a reflash or a PCV, disable the PAIR, full exhaust, and improve air intake with a high flow air filter and snorkel work depending on your location. Why do I not find any cams, valve springs, head/valve work, etc like in decades past?

The performance is just a byproduct of the modifications you mentioned:
- pair valve, no gains - smoother throttle
- pcv/flash, small power gains - way smoother power delivery
- exhaust /air filter - negligible gains - more for sound and bragging rights.

The $ per bhp is not justified and this brings me to the two main reasons I see.
Market changed and there are a lot of options of mass produced specialized bikes. The other is homologation for street use.

There is no need, and therefor no offers, to take a street bike and rebuild the engine to make it a race one. The options are very limited, expensive and usually available for non street legal bikes: dirt, supersport track bikes or drag racing. The 650 is not the go to platform for any of them.

Sure. Back in the 70's there were limited bikes/motors to use, so mods I mentioned were the way to go. Now with so many bikes/engines/performance levels you just find the right bike and improve it's performance as needed. Thanks
