All 650's Magnetic Sump Plug Debris

Hello all, did an oil change last week and was intrigued to see if the sump plug had gripped anything after a year and 4,000 miles. The magnet is quite narrow but still a fair bit of junk on it.

Anyone else use one? Have opinions on their benefit or pictures after use?

Didn't enjoy trying to get the old filter off with a rubber strap wratchet, it was too tight I suspect overtightened by the dealer. Straight on with the K&N one not for the badge but because of the simple 17mm socket on it! Much easier and just as cheap.20181010_154303.jpg20181010_154315.jpg20181010_154252.jpg

2 years since my last oil change since I haven't done that many miles in that time (shame on me)

A super exciting update to the amount of debris I found this time around.

General wear and tear of an engine.

The sump plug will be picking up debris that the filter is designed to catch, so it looks worse than it is.

Upside is the filter will be having an easy time of it :)

If any of those shards are big, check things like cam chain tensioner is working OK.

Oil should be changed annually along with the filter, regardless of mileage covered.

Don't worry, it is the slag of the metal parts that form at the edges during the molding phase, especially when the bike is new. The magnet serves to capture them and not send them around further. In time you will find fewer, at least hopefully ...

I hope the ferrous debris don't come from the clutch. As far as I know clutch is made of resin, definitely not ferrous.
Makes you wonder why the manual says to change the oil filter every 2nd oil change.

They are metal filings, the clutch has consumables but not ferrous. Never found metal residues in the oil filter, they probably stop first in the magnetic plug. However, personally I replace the filter together with the oil, for what it costs ...

Of course, I've been using these filters for years on every bike. HIFLO, around 10.00 euros.

You must not be buying OEM oil filters. They're $30 USD each.
Not sure where you are buying them from but not even my highly overpriced OEM Ducati and Triumph filters are over $20 each. The last Honda filters I bought were around $12 at any dealer I went to.

It does says made in the USA on it. Maybe that's why it's cheaper for you? We don't have a Honda Motorcycle dealer here perse, only partnered dealer.
