Yamaha MT-07 and MT-09 tracer

Seen video on utube by English biker Dan I think it was. He owned an MT07 ( not the Tracer model though ) and compares it with the Honda CB650R he now owns. He says the Honda suspension and brakes are clearly better - the Yamaha brakes are 'wooden' and lack bite and the rear shock is basically poor and not really up to the job. The finish on the Yamaha particularly swingarm shows rust on the welds quite soon. The only things I can remember where he says the Yamaha comes out on top is the seat and instrument panel.

Yesterday I went to test ride the Tracer 900 GT, he accepted $10k
But I didn’t get it yet bc I noticed something odd on the front end
The whole front end seems “bent”, the crankcase cover is Scratched and the rear brake is bent
I didn’t feel anything odd when riding it, but considering that I never ridden this bike before maybe I didn’t spot it

That would concern me. If you haven't paid for it I would leave it and forget it.

Yeah I didn’t pay for it
He has just admitted to have it dropped it on the side when stationary
But he only admitted it now, so I don’t trust him
Good job you spotted it and didn't buy it, but apart from that how did you actually find the ride. I test rode a Yamaha MT09 and found it an unpleasant thing, an all or nothing , go or stop sort of thing ,didn't like it . Don't know if they are all like that.

Yeah I’m glad I didn’t go for it, don’t wanna put something in my garage for $10k that doesn’t convince me at first
If he would have been clear since the beginning it was a different story

as for the riding experience, the Tracer is a bit different from the MT09, the longer swing arm makes it a bit slower at turning in, it was a very relaxed riding btw.
The rear shock is too soft, a lot of people in the Tracer forum said that is a must mod, especially when starting to put weight on the bike, but they also told me that without the pillion I would have been good.

And yes, go and stop is completely different, I think also the ride by wire changes the experience.
The vibrations were not buzzy like our bikes, so when cruising was very pleasant (the cruise control is amazing).
I’m obviously disappointed that the deal went sideways, bc the tracer really ticks a lot of the things I’m looking for.
Oh, the engine is kinda odd, it sounds like a lawnmower 🤣 with the stock exhaust, but the torque is there.

Yup, you made the right decision. If it was no big deal, he should have mentioned it; not that it was probably a fatal flaw but that's the stuff that drives me bonkers about used bikes. I end up spending more on them than I would if I bought new "fixing" the crap that previous owners neglect or do to a bike. Seriously, every used bike I bought I've dealt with this and decided a few years ago that I wasn't going to anymore.

You have to feel right about a deal, if not, walk. At $8,500 that wouldn't be a big deal, but not at $10K.

Interesting to hear about the shock, I thought I read the Tracer GT had a decent shock, sprung right for the bike, unlike the standard Tracer and FJ-09 before it. Good to know ahead of time it's not if I decide to go that route.

My feelings on the 900 triple were it's kinda sneaky fast with a very useable power band, similar to my 1050 Triumph though it rev's much quicker and higher than the Triumph lump does. RBW is something that takes getting used to no matter the system in my experience as well.

Glad you rode it. So if you found one for a good price that was clean would you do it?

Thanks for the support 😅

even if it was $8.500 I was still not sure about the entity of the damage, could have been way more than a couple of thousands.
The odd thing is that he did not even bother to lower the price or to offer a complete check up at the dealer.
Either, really is not a big damage, or he realized that he f***ed up trying to play with me.

I guess I'll wait a bit more time on my dream of having a touring bike.

The 2019 has been improved with the shock, but still not enough. Also the front springs suffer a bit. but these can be fixed easily by going with just the springs and not the whole shock and front cartridges.

If I find a clean bike, I would go for it. At the moment there is nothing listed. I'm still considering other bikes, like more adventure than sport touring.
One thing that I'm going for, is no less than 115hp.
I'll keep you guys posted.

Brain storming going on atm

Trying to make a decision between these

Found a Tracer 900 (non GT) with 1500miles still under warranty (bought June 2020) with a lot of upgrades (radiator guard, crash bars, 2 puig windscreens one sport and one touring, integrated turn signals tail light and Front turn signals with white daytime running lights) - $9000
This one does not have cruise control, heated grips and no side cases. Both suspensions and shock need to be upgrade ($2000 for both). Most important is the rear shock ($600/$900 depend on which shock I get).
This has 115hp.
Also found a new one (stock) in NC, for $8900 (all fees and registration included) + shipping with Uship and I assume it would be another $500/600. Not really sure if I would go through the hassle of have it shipped here.
I can drive in KY (3 hours) and get the used one.

Found 2 Triumph Tiger 800 - both 2016- XCX with 2000miles for $8000 and XCA with 9000miles for $8700.
Both come with aluminum cases and all the bells and whistles they can offer. The XCA is the better equipped.
These have 95hp.
Both in TN and within 2 hours driving.
edit: too bad they run tubed tires.

KTM 1190 Adventure 2014/15 - around 8000miles - for $8500 - one comes with aluminum cases and the other does not. and looks like these do not have Cruise control.
150hp for these beasts.
These are 3 hours away.

I know that the Tracer is a very good all around bike, and since I'm not considering any off road (maybe besides some camping here and there) is the better choice.
And for sure parts are easier to find.
But the others offer a lot for the money and are ready to go.

I've listed them in the order I want them. 😅
The Tracer is holding me back on the amount of $$$$. Even if I'm not going for suspensions and shock, still have to buy panniers ($730 if going with SW Motech AERO ABS)
(luckily I already have aftermarket heated grips, SW motech Micro tank bag and Tail bag, Denali DM aux lights that I can recoup from the CB), the CB would be for my fun rides and commute.

edit: my friend is pushing me to get the Multistrada to make the perfect Italian team lol, found a few 950 2017 low mileage for around $9000, which is not bad....

Please share to me your thoughts, and to defeat my demons. ahahahahah

I’ve seen new standard Tracers as low as $7999 around but the lack of luggage stock, integrated heated grips and factory cruise, and no ability to add the cruise later, would keep (personally speaking) me away from it. Unless you need one NOW I’d hold off until late fall/winter/spring and pick up GT for the price you want.

The Triumphs are great, solid bikes. You can’t go wrong with them though know parts aren’t cheap, normally not in stock and there are less dealers around. Same shit I always say. Also know that their resale value is horrible and you’ll struggle to get a good price if you decide to trade it or move on. Use it to your advantage to buy one but that’s a drawback Triumph has always had. I paid around $6K for my Sprint in late 2016 with 10k on it at a dealer, it was a $13k bike new. I can sell it for $5k or so with 20k now on it but yeah, depreciates quickly

As far as the KTM, it’s a beast, and they are very finicky electronics wise unless it’s a 2018/19 or newer, even then fiddly, expensive to maintain and big, burly beasts. Cool bike, though, better suited for off road those years. If the crooked fairing on the last Tracer bothered you, I’d probably stay away from the KTM because in the south adventure bikes, especially the KTMs, go off road and will get tipped over on the many gravel roads down there.

The Multi is typical Ducati, cool, expensive, fun and expensive. Make sure to research the years you’re looking at, some years are electronic nightmares and there was a few years the cylinder heads were made with tiny holes In them that leaked coolant into the engine while running. There was a sort of recall on them but not everyone noticed or fixed it. I think more 15/16 but research to be sure. Might have been the 1100 as well, I just know there’s lots of talk on the Duc forums about the Multistrada being disappointing.

Also, I swooned over the 950 for a while and thought it was cool, even “built” one on the Ducati website to order it in winter ‘19 then noticed it was a dual sided swingarm and not a single sided like it’s big brother and then it stopped being as appealing to me visually. And having 2 bikes in the Ducati family made me rethink the need for expensive maintenance on two bikes.

It’s easy to get caught up in getting a new bike, then the one you want falls through and you start looking all over again, and get into the whole decision thing again. I honestly think you can’t go wrong with any of these bikes as long as the visually, equipment wise and financially meet your needs and are well maintained.

If it were my money, my decision and I wanted something NOW: Tracer GT, Triumph, new Tracer standard, Multistrada and KTM would be my order.

Personal feelings on all this.

On the tracer 900 there is the possibility to add the stock heated grips and aftermarket cruise control

The stock panniers are for sure a good add on bc is also using the very same key for everything. But reviews said they are small (not really looking for something super huge, but who knows maybe I'll need bigger panniers one day and with aftermarket mountings I can swap for bigger ones)

I would like to wait, but the used one (if he replies to me through cycle trader) is really a good deal considering all the mods he already put on it.
I'm not even sure how much lower I can bring down a GT, they sell good and value is strong.

Triumph is a solid bike for sure, but as you just said, lack of parts and cost effectiveness hold me back, also after seeing the tubed tires, I'm dropping the ball. I would like to have a chance to plug a puncture on the way, and avoid carrying extra tools to remove the tire to patch the tube.
If there was one with alloy wheels, would be much better.

Ktm, after some more research, yes the electronic on those is a bit finicky.

The thing is holding me back on the Multi, is the very same thing like Triumph, lack of parts and being expensive, also I've read that you can not reset the oil service light by yourself, forcing me to bring it in (also read that some dealers will not do it if they don't perform the whole service, which kinda sucks really bad)

I like your order, Tracer 900 and GT are on top of my list at the moment.
I'm getting through a home refinance, and I got approved and things are going through, I'm about to pay the application fees, once I'm done with it, I'll buy one and start putting miles on it.

I kinda figured you (or someone else) would bring that up. I've researched them, why I don't like it unless I had to:
1. Not OEM so it's something added on to get a dealer to deny warranty issues or possible cause electrical problems
2. $540. Add that on top the purchase price, the Tracer is now not such a "great" price.

All true, but unless you have bags that can be used, figure in that cost. These lock and should be great for most reasonable trips. Helps resale as well.

The used Tracer an OK price but unless YOU want the exact add on's I never see them as a bonus and would never pay extra for them and it seems like it's priced high because of the add on's. Do you actually want two screens? Are the crash bars a big deal? A radiator guard is like $100, everything else worth it? I can't see buying used for a bike I can buy less or the same new and add on EXACTLY what I want, when I want. You have a lot more issues leverage with Yamaha 2 or 3 years down the road when you buy the bike new than if it's used.

Looking on Cycle Trader new non-GT Tracers are in the $7000-7500 range plus $400 destination charge so like $8k plus TTL. Call around a bit, find a shop with no stupid processing or dealer fees, fly in for $150 and ride it home. Make them bid against each other a bit. Heres a new Tracer and a Tracer GT in Arizona:

Maybe call and see what they are looking at OTD from out of state :)

Here's a used GT near Milwaukee with 700 miles, call and make a $9,500 offer out the door, then pay tax and license in your state. It's mid august up here, they need to look at moving bikes before winter and things get REAL bad for them:

It's all up to you and what you are comfortable with; I am playing a bit of a devil's advocate and telling you why I'd look elsewhere and get EXACTLY what I wanted and not settle. Any time I settled in the past, I always regretted it. Anything you are looking at should be fun 2nd bike for ya!!!

It is true that would be an issue on the warranty and it is also true that would pump the price up making the GT more accessible if brought home for a reasonable OTD price.

The used Tracer has pretty much the mods that I was looking for, this is why I'm considering it. But they're not a necessity.

Please consider that I'm not really comfortable taking flights atm. Especially bc I'm still working (I never really stopped) and I'm getting paid, and I would like to avoid exposing myself so much for just a bike.
My job is on the field (sometimes I get lucky working remotely) and would be bad for me to get sick.
It is also true that I can get sick any moment even if I'm very careful in what I'm doing and where I'm going. Even more if I'm planning solo trips on my brand new spanking touring bike.
Beside me being paranoid....lets move on

The Tracer in Concord, NC....called them and the final price with all taxes and fees (considered TN taxes) would be around $8900 (plus either have it shipped with Uship or fly in and ride back home)
Called the one in Milwaukee and $10.800 is the OTD (no BS fees as they said lol), which I think it's great. (Considering I was willing to pay $10k for a bent '19 😜)
He said to call back on Monday bc the sales guy is not at the location today. I'll see if I can get it down to $10k (or less) based on the warranty left.

Down to final numbers with all taxes and whatever fees:
around $9000 for a new Tracer 900 '19
around $11000 for a new GT '20

Thanks for backing me up, regretting it is the last thing I want atm.

Honestly, never considered it, thanks for reminding me. I'd be concerned as well, my job is considered essential and getting sick is the last thing I need right now. We sent 8 people home for 2 weeks last week, one of my employees included, because they had direct contact with a known positive. That does factor in, my bad for not thinking.

Milwaukee should be willing to work a bit, I've seen it a few weeks now, with new '19's still out there and getting ready for 2021's to hit the showrooms I'd hope they'd work with you. Heck, if work didn't just do a 15% wage decrease last week, I'd even have considered it!!

I wish you all the best and that everyone will be ok. Be safe out there.

Yeah the situation doesn't help at all, this is also why I'm more towards the Tracer 900 which is closer to me and I'll be driving. (the guy on cycle trader called me today and it's still available)

On Monday I'll call the dealer to check if they're willing to come down a bit, I would like to get it OTD no more than $10.500 (taxes and reg will be another $750 or more, plus the flight and ride back)

I'm excited as well, Thanks!!!

BTW, don't bother calling Ride Now in Arizona. Shit, ANY discount is eaten up by $900 freight, $890 dealer prep, $600 doc fee. They suck!!!!!!

Thanks for the heads up!!!!!

Don't know what it's like in USA but here I wouldn't want to buy from a dealer more than about 50 miles away so that I could fairly easily take the bike back if there was a problem ; and I wouldn't buy without a test ride. Even with test rides I end up finding things I don't like after riding bikes for a while !

Warranty is from manufacturers and not from dealers
In any country you are able to take it to any dealers for any warranty issues
But totally under your point, makes sense to have a fixed place as reference
