Yamaha MT-07 and MT-09 tracer

I am looking at a 2019 Yamaha mt07 tracer which looks and feels good although I haven't had a test ride yet. Looking at reviews on utube you can never seem to get an honest opinion or you get conflicting views. From my experience of some previous bikes I have owned, I am concerned about wind noise and suspension. Some reviewers express concern about wind noise and others don't mention it. Some say suspension is awful on country roads and others say all is fine. Anybody got any experience of this model ? Comments appreciated.

I had the MT07 naked, LOVED the bike! Only downside was the rear shock, was awful. I believe the Tracer has an updated shock.

Bottom line...get the bike you like and don't worry what others say. Reviews are different for every rider. Unless there's something major that most owners say has also happened to them, I wouldn't worry about it.

I demo'd one of those a year or two ago and, me personally, I wasn't impressed at all. I thought the engine sounded...weird. As if it was made of tin or something. Also, when I talked with other riders after the demo, surprisingly they were all unimpressed. One guy even said he was so excited to test one out as his heart was set on getting one. By the time he got back he was so let down!

Again, if YOU like it then that's all that matters. Try to get one out for a ride and go from there.

I’m looking for a sport touring (maybe adventure) bike as well, during the come winter I’ll go for it
And I love the look of the new 07 tracer, but I’m concerned about suspensions and rear shock.
Also the small engine doesn’t really convince me that much.
So I’m more for the Tracer 900 GT
Also considering other brands as well.
Triumph Tiger
Ducati Multistrada
Suzuki V Strom
And some others
One other important factor will be my available budget when the time comes

but as Devilsfan @Devilsfan said, go get it if you like it!!!

Between owning a V-strom, an NC700 and a Versys...HANDS DOWN I'd go with the Suzuki! It's more "adventurous" than the Honda and Versys. I should have nover gotten rid of my V-strom. That thing was a tank!
Can't speak on the BMW or the Ducati. I have a friend that has a Tiger. I rode it and it was nice...but I'd still take a V-strom.

If it were me, Tracer GT (900). I’d test ride the Multistrada and the Tiger but my money would be on the GT. The ‘storm is a great bike but feels long in the tooth to me; not a lot of bang-for-the-buck in my mind.

I was not impressed with the MT-07 when I rode one.

My wallet is saying either the 900 GT or V Strom (1000/1050)
My mind is saying either the Tiger or Multistrada
My heart will always be on the CB650R 😅

I also took a look at the Africa Twin, it's a superb machine IMO. But too much off road oriented (also the Tiger and VStrom to be honest), which is something that I'm not planning to do.
In somehow I would like to keep a little bit of sport DNA. Just in case I find some twisties along the way ;)

If I can test ride any of those, will help me a lot to make a decision.
Hopefully I can find a stock clearance to save some $$$$, or maybe consider a used unit in good condition.

Planning to do long trips, so having a shaft drive would be best, but expensive. What do you guys think?

Shaft drive is overrated, imho. A properly maintained chain will go 15K-20K easy and is cheap and easy to replace, OEM sprockets can go twice that so unless you plan to be on the road 40K at a time, chains are a solid choice. Most people over maintain them and think they are a hassle because of it, clean it once in a while, make sure it’s not dry all the time, keep it adjusted (too loose is better than too tight) and enjoy the most efficient drive system out there.

So as cool as the AT is, unless you plan to go off-road, a street oriented adventure bike is a better road choice. The Tracer, Multi and the more street focused Tiger models will have plenty of sport capabilities, you’d be surprised how much fun they can be. I can hustle down a twisty road two up on my undersprung Sprint within a few mph of my Ohlins equipped, properly setup Supersport and that bike is a heavy pig.

But both the Tiger and Multi suffer from overseas-itis and are expensive yo maintain, find decent shops and parts take forever to get here. As an only bike, I recommend a Japanese mount, but look at a used first gen Super Duke GT as well if that doesn’t bother you. I just can’t warm to the Strom, sorry.

The Tracer GT has factory cruise, factory luggage, full color TFT, full abs setup, full traction control setup, is light, and that 900 triple is the perfect combination of a twins torque and a 4s ability to rev with that perfect ~120hp level of power that makes a bike fun to ride without being overwhelming or something you need to watch every minute of every day.

All that for around $11k for black/blue leftover ‘19s, a much better color scheme in my book, though the 2020 orange and black is good as well. Try to find a used one, they are impossible to get because people hold onto them. They are that good.

My money would be on a Tracer GT if I had to have an only 1 bike garage, and my Sprint might have gone away this summer for one had COVID not happened and made all my fun money dry up. I’d try to justify one but at this point I just can’t so I’ll wait a bit to see if something changes.

you absolutely nailed every single points, everything you said is why I’m more convinced on the tracer 900 GT
Best bang for the buck imo.
Super Duke GT is a very nice machine, but trying to avoid bigger engine, I just don’t feel the need.
The 847cc 3 cylinder on the tracer is very adequate for my needs.
And yes shaft drive is OR, and expensive, a friend of mine had to replace it (right after the warranty expired) on his BMW GS, and he still cursing after 1 year ($$$$$$$) 😅
Definitely parts and labor are 2 downsides here in US, Yamaha OEM or aftermarket are super easy to find.

looking on cycle trader I found sone good deals, if during the winter there are more available I’ll get one.
Trying to avoid another brand new bike, don’t wanna hit my finances too much. (I hope the used unit doesn’t give me too much trouble, otherwise would be more painful)

The MT07 Tracer is just a very low mileage used model the dealer I usually buy bikes from (about 10 so far ) has in stock at the moment and I thought looked good and had the wide bars upright riding position I sort of liked. I can't afford a new bike so it isn't a question of trying out whatever bike I fancy, more what comes available from a dealer that will give me a reasonable trade in price on my bike. A test ride is a must but even then I have bought bikes after a test ride and then found something I didn't like about them and wished I had kept the old bike (C'est la vie !!!)

This is the sort of thing I need to avoid, I can't afford to be replacing the shock after I have just bought a bike. Will check it out.

If you know the shock is junk going in, you can include a replacement in your budget AND in your negotiations with the dealer.
Thanks for comments but I don't think a dealer is going to accept any reduction for the shock on a nearly new bike ,and upgrading suspension on a bike ( in my experience with a quotation from a suspension specialist and other owners who have upgrade suspension on their bike ) is not cheap.

The Yamaha top case is the one piece of gear I'd like to try and can't find anyone with one on. My passenger is VERY picky, and if it doesn't fit her right, she's complain. A lot. Like not worth it lot.

Good looking bike :)

There was a '19 at Waynesville Honda in North Carolina that I was hoping to do a fly and ride to get but it seems like they sold it. Hoping life is better next year!!!!

Yeah this one is pretty much spot on, everything is already there, and seems in very good shape....

I'll wait a bit more time to see if he lowers the price and make him a offer.
Maybe I can bring her home for $9500.
I'm very itchy at the moment 😅, I really want to start riding on long trips.

Hopefully next year is better 🤞

Yeah, $11k is a bit too much in my book, none of the accessories are "must have" so you could live without them and get a brand new one for the same or even less. I think $9,500 is a good area to be in :)

Here's a 2020: https://www.cycletrader.com/listing/2020-Yamaha-TRACER-900-GT-5011965006

that 2020 is a very good price, but adding all costs (tax, fees.....) will go way too high for me.
so that $9500 is a good area.
Just spoke with a very good friend of mine (the GS guy that I mentioned previously), and he said that is a very good bike, he tried it and told me to go and get it if the price comes down.
Lets see what he does with the price in the meantime.
