Hey folks! How are we all?

Was thinking of getting a phone mount for my bike to use as a sat nav and a general do everything then stumbled upon the TOMTOM rider 550. Decided to watch a few youtube videos and the general consensus was its a decent bit of kit.

Decided to think less and do more, so just went and got it. Hopefully I wont regret that rash decision. If you are from the UK and wondering about getting it there are some good offers on. Managed to get £100 of the RRP.

Next thing is unboxing and seeing if I can get this wired in! (Any advice or how to videos will be great). Haven't searched the world wide web to see if there is a dummies how to guide. Whats everyones views on a dedicated nav system and what systems are people currently using?

I replied on your other thread where you mentioned it, but I'll do it again here. For powering the device, consider using the accessory port. Powers on/off with the bike as it's a switched live.

Thanks Rafe, appreciate that. Have looked at the thread and will give it a go with a mate. If I later wanted to attach some heated grips would I be able to to the same connection point? Or would i need to order 2x HM connectors?

I am going to order the HM 2 way connector from ebay with the link you used in that thread. You outlined in some detail of how to get access to it so shouldn't be too much of a problem. Also, I was going to do it with bike stand on or would you recommend an actual motorcycle stand?

My pleasure.

Here's the dual outlet version from John on his eBay store.

He made these up after speaking to me about the accessory socket. I bought the single one initially and gave him feedback on the fitment which was perfect. So he then started to make dual outlets so that you can connect two accessories (heated grips and a TomTom/USB phone connection as an example).

Getting to the socket is easy enough. Just lift the tank. No need to disconnect any hoses, just be really careful how much you lift the tank. You only need to undo the front tank nuts and slacken the rears. Prop the tank up with something and you're golden. I did all mine on the side stand.

Crimping the cables takes some practice. If I were you, send him a message on eBay and purchase a spare set of the metal connections just in case you crimp it up wrong. I messed one up and then got the knack of it. I just used a normal crimping tool instead of the specific one for those connections. It's too expensive for a one off job. If you've got a wire crimp lying around then just use that.

Mate I owe you a beer or 10 with the amount of guidance you've given me - I cant thank you enough! If its a side stand job then I think ill be able to do it sooner. I enquired with a garage how much they would charge me and they said its going to be about 50 quid - I think ill try with a friend first as Im totally useless at this but would definitely love to have a blast trying to do it.

My friend is a mechanic so I'll double check what tools he has and go from there with that one. Ive just dropped John a message as I dont want to overload the accessory port by adding to many things onto it and I cant find what the output is in the manual.

Which oxford grips did you get? Ive had a look at the sports premium ones and I saw someone post about the OEM ones which also look v.smart but the price difference is crazyyyy

No problem at all. Been there and done it so it's good to share some knowledge.

As Brammers @Brammers says, I have the Oxford sport ones https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Oxford-Advanced-Sports-Heated-Motorcycle-Motorbike-Hot-Grips/164069863669
