Hi,
According to the parts catalog (CB650FA 2016) the oil filter part # is 15410 MFJ D01.
I have seen some dealers use part # 15410 MCJ 505.
What is the difference between these tow filters?
Searching the web didn't get me a good answers.

If you have any reliable source of information please share.

Thanks,

I'd actually recommend getting the filter & socket tool kit. This means you can apply the correct torque using a wrench when installing the new filter.

Part # to follow later.

Service is sometimes a joke over here. They will put on any filter that fits,my last one was for a Toyota car,and
the one before was for a Yamaha. Maybe if i kissed their ass i could get a honda one next time.

If you call Honda big wing will they provide this information ?
This is the reason I went to a motorcycle technician school so I can do the work alone. CB650F is easy to maintain.
Maintenance here is really bad!

Magdiel, I live to far from honda big wings so i get a small honda dealer in my town to due some maintenance.
My mechanic has a drinking problem but he does nice work.I have put most of my accessories on myself[ and i
have many] because nobody else would. but i am just to lazy to do all the servicing and i don't have the tools.
I would rather ride than fix.

I couldn't agree with you more... I prefer to ride then fix the bike...

I hear you there. If I wanted to fix more than I wanted to ride, I'd have bought a Harley ;)

Hi guys does anyone know if a KN-204 would fit a cbr650f 2017? I wasn't given a service manual.... And from what I can see on the 2014 posted here, it doesn't actually specify... Also oil recommendation would be amazing. Im doing the 4k miles service, which is just oil and oil filter, but need to keep the bike in warranty, so would preferably like to keep to the spec. I believe it's semi synthetic oil?

Ton of threads on this... Search is your friend.

Castrol power 4 10w30 oil is a solid choice. As for filter, check on k&n website for fitment. A Honda oem one is only a tenner though!

Motorcycle specific oil, dino or synthetic, your choice, and an OEM filter are the best bet you can do.

FYI, service manual can be downloaded off a link from here and the owners manual can be downloaded off Honda’s website directly.

KN-204 will fit. Same price point as an OEM filter give or take. Get a strap wrench at the ready for the old filter! Mine was a pig to take off, K&N has a socket on it making it simple to fit and torque up.

Thanks all for the quick response. I've ordered a KN-204 as it was cheaper than OEM. I cannot find the link to Hondas manual download anywhere. - as for the oil, according to my previous service (700 mile service) they chucked in 10w40 super 4 silkolene semi-syn. Is this something I want to keep up or do I want to jump to another type? Bare in mind I live in the UK where it can get pretty cold... Such as today :'(

I'm running 10w40 as well. It's no problem.
You'll probably need a wrench for the OEM filter (I got one of these, not sure of the size). The K&N one has a 17mm nut at the top which can be used with a regular nut wrench.

Wicked glad to hear. Are you running semi-syn or fully? Thanks for the info buddy appreciate it.

Semi synthetic. I filled it with Putoline Sport 4 10w40 semi synthetic. I think the manual suggests 10w30 though but I don't think it matters much unless you're living in pretty extreme conditions.

This will be the only time I will link this, I typed “service manual” into the search box and this was the fourth or fifth title in the search results:

https://650f.bike/threads/2014-service-manual.100/

It’s for a 2014-2016 but the engine is 99% the same so oil spec and proceedure wise, it’s the same. The specs and procedure should be in your owners manual as well.

10w-30 or 10w-40 will work just fine for your needs, full synthetic, dino or semi synthetic is a personal choice as any will work just fine as long as you change it at the recommended interval.

The K&N oil filter is good as well provided you are CAREFUL with the 17mm nut, it’s not meant to be torqued nor will it stand up to any large force put on it and can, and will, leak if overtightened. Search for the K&N recall on the KN-204 filters for info on what can happen. It had been going on for years before they finally did something about it.

Lots of people love them but there’s a reason OEMs have not gone that route even though it would cut costs by never having to have multiple wrenches for filters and the ease of removal the wrench provides: too easy to overtighten. I used K&N oil filters for years because of the nut, availability and price but stopped several years ago because of the failures I had been seeing happen. I am careful and even had a small leak a couple times.

YMMV.
